I like reading them to myself or to older kids. I find them too long for my toddler to sit through.

Absolutely. I read the longer books out loud a ton when I was pregnant. E doesn't have the patience for the longer ones now, but he loves the short board books (like Mr Brown). We read the ABC book daily.

No lo yet, but my dad always looooved reading them to us so I love them, I associate them with really happy memories with my dad

yes!! he's a lyrical genius. i find dr suess lovers are generally people who appreciate poetry & rap. his books are incredible works of art. seriously, in all of my years reading the 'sleep book', i've finished it ONCE! not only is his work lyrically genius, he can inspire sleep and what person putting a toddler to bed doesn't appreciate that??

Yep. Dr. Seuss is big in this house. DS loves his books. He did a unit in Kindergarten with the books. Once kids are in school, it's hard to avoid, anyways.

That being said, don't bring your kid to see a Seussical...it's got some adult undertones that makes it more for grown-ups, rather than kids.

We never read them at library storytime because they can be difficult to navigate while reading to a group and way, way too long. That being said, I think they are fun and a great learning tool for older pre-readers that have longer attention spans. The rhyming (even with made up words) is an extremely important part of the learning to read process, so they are great for that.

I don't have a LO yet (DS is due in March), but I did buy the ABC board book for him! I think DH said his dad saved all their old Dr. Seuss books and is giving them to us. I'm excited to read them when DS gets older just because I think it's awesome they are the books his dad used

@mrbee: hehe! Maybe. Well as a kid I just avoided that book and read other Dr. Seuss books. But as an adult I just prefer other books.

@mrs. wagon: That sounds scarring. I wouldn't have eaten them either!

@Arden: I was a really shy child so I didn't say anything and eventually ate them, and when I got home I cried and cried! My mom tried to explain to me that they just used food coloring that is tasteless (the teachers insisted they were really from green eggs) and then I felt silly, but it was still so scarring!

@mrbee: I totally forgot about Mr Brown! We have that as a board book and LO likes it! He also likes the one about feet!

I Dr. Seuss!! Xander's only 9 months, so we don't read most of the books yet, but I love Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?, the ABC book, and Hop on Pop!

I love them! Except there's this one that's full of tongue twisters and that one can get difficult when I'm tired and trying to read it before bed

I love them, hoping to get more of them for L at Christmas! His favorite is Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?

And I've never thought about the whole made-up words thing, but I very doubtful that such a thing is really going to affect my child's speech. I say to him when we're reading sometimes, "Isn't that a silly word? Made-up words can be funny!" but that's about all the thought I've ever given it.

I love the first few pages of every book, but after a while, I get a little tired of the made-up words.. the kids also get a little tired of it.

I like them because they are easy for me to read and I like the "flow" of them. I loved them when I was little and my mom always read them to me.

However, they are a little long for my 12 month old! So we do short ones.. or just read till he is bored.

We love Dr. Seuss! I read The Sneetches to DS1 tonight at bedtime.

Fox in Socks is one of my favorites right now. All the tongue twisters are so hard but I'm determined to get better and better at them!
