I know us cloth diapering moms have to deposit the poop into the toilet, and I heard that that's suppose to be the case for disposable diapers as well, but does anyone really do that? I've never heard of anyone really doing it, because that almost defeats the purpose of a disposable diaper being more convenient.

We don't mainly b/c LO's poops aren't hard enough yet! He's only 4.5 months, but I can't see us doing that once he's older either. I'm with you in that I think it sort of defeats the purpose of a disposable diaper.

LO isn't even hear yet, but yeah... seems to defeat the purpose. I'd rather just take the trash out more frequently.

We use them at night and I always flush solid poop. But I'm really conscious of it because we CD.

Man, I would never. I use disposables at night and out in the world, and I love how easy they are. I love cloth diapering, but dealing with the poop is the major drawback for me. I would never give that up when I do use disposables!

I do it when we use disposables!

We do a mix of cloth and disposable. I think using cloth got me into the habit of flushing poop, so we now do it with disposables as well.

@pastemoo: to keep it from leaking into the groundwater from the landfills I think. It's a bigger environmental deal than the landfill space.

I never do. Our waste is incinerated in a trash burning power plant so I figure it is fine.

I didn't even you're supposed to do this. Right now LO's poos are runny and seedy so can't really dispose in the toilet. Maybe when they become more firm.

Interesting! I never really thought about flushing the solid poo. I can see how this would reduce the smell factor in the diaper pail.

I've never heard of people flushing poop from disposables before either! Where I live in Canada (about 30 minutes north of Toronto, Ontario), diapers are collected with other organic waste which is turned into compost rather than going to landfills.

Yes--like PPs, we cloth diaper except at night time, so I'm in the habit. But with the disposables, I just shake the diaper a little and whatever falls in the toilet is good enough. I'm a lot more careful to get it all in the toilet with cloth.
I'm hoping that putting it in the toilet helps make the connection in LO's brain that poop always goes in the toilet-- that's the preferred place for it, not his diaper. Right now, (at 15 months), after a diaper change, he wipes himself, drops the wipe in the toilet with what I shake in, then we wave bye-bye while it all goes down the drain.

We CD part time (a lot less now that we're toilet learning...), but I flush anything solid whether it is in underwear (ugh), CDs, or disposables. If I can shake it off or easily scrape it, it goes in the toilet. I didn't hook up our diaper hose after we moved because the really soupy eliminations were behind us at that point, but I always hosed CDs after LO started solids.

@NerdBee: Yeah, it's not like ruminant poop with healthy bacteria. Think of all the folks with vancomycin resistant enterococcus or E. coli O157:H7. That would sketch me out, but maybe they know something I don't know?

It's rare that we catch a poop in a disposable diaper, but if we do I don't shake it out.
