Yep. I taught kindergarten for many years and nearly all homework required and adult/older person to participate. Most things were games like counting silverware at dinner or playing sound I spy, but also for reading and math facts practice.

Although I think if I had given that assignment my intent would have been for my students to be the ones choosing the photos with the parents being more of a conversation partner/technical support.

I taught at an inner-city school for 2 years and tried desperately not to require participation from parents (or to alter the activity if possible.) A lot of my curriculum had ridiculous things for parents to do, and I was required to send it home. I made it clear at conferences that those sorts of things were excellent if they could be managed, but that I wanted my kids and their parents to have genuine, positive interactions, not have the 2 hours they had together a day be a fight over homework. I encouraged reading together and then was always available if the kids needed help (via cell phone) and parents didn't understand. Our school dismissed at 4 and many of my students were in after-school until 6, so that didn't leave much time for homework! I would send home things like flashcards, etc. and generally offered activity choices so students and parents who WANTED to push themselves a bit could, but parents who couldn't participate (due to ability or time or even desire) wouldn't hold back their kiddos.

I also only graded homework for completion (2nd grade). If I "graded" homework parents helped with, I was really only giving more advantages to my students who already were advantaged.

I remember a lot of projects my parents were supposed to help me with in elementary school, though, so I don't think it's that new.
