Do you ever have this issue?? I've had it before, but it's usually just itchy for a day and then goes away. This time around it's been driving me nuts for a week!! Any advice?? I've been trying to make sure I keep it clean (taking off my ring to wash under it too) and put lotion on it when it's dry, but it's not going away!

Not my wedding ring but I had that happen with another ring once. I discontinued wearing it for a week, put cortisone cream on it twice/day, and kept lots of lotion on it otherwise.

hahah had the same problem a while back. and i posted about it too, let me dig a lil further
anyway, i cleaned my rings at home with hydrogen peroxide and vinegar, and kept my rings off for a few days.
apparently it's a common problem!

Have you always had this problem, or did it just develop recently? It could be just a dry skin thing, or it could be a mild allergic reaction.

@mrsjyw: Huh - never heard of cleaning them with hydrogen peroxide and vinegar! Maybe I'll have to try that. And I was thinking I might have to take it off for a few days, but was hoping I didn't - I'll feel naked without it!

@pui: I've been married for over 4 years and it's maybe been mildly itchy like twice before, but only for a day. This time it's been a week! So I didn't think I'd be allergic...

This happens to dh sometimes with a different ring that he wears on his right hand, and it turned out that it's a form of excema, he has a prescription cream from a dermatologist to treat it. It only flares up occasionally.

Sounds suspicious for nickel allergy.
Nickel's often a component in alloys used for wedding band. -
@Adira: Your ring doesn't happen to be plated, right? Is it the same metal all the way through?

DH has a school ring that is bad (on all said school ring wearers) and their solution is clear coat of nail polish on the ring where it touches the skin! Not sure if you want to do that to yours though!

@Adira: this happened to me.. it's fairly common when you get build up on your ring (check google!)... i stopped wearing my ring until the itchiness went away. as for the ring, i just soaked mine in vinegar overnight and walah, problem solved! there are some fancy concoctions out there (like a vinegar/benzol peroxide mix and boiling it), but mine was fine just sitting in vinegar for a long long time. i'm convinced vinegar is the cure for all things.

This happened to me once a few years ago. I can't remember exactly what I did, but I do remember not wearing it for a week, deep cleaning it, and putting hydrocortisone on my finger.

@mrsjyw: I'm doing the vinegar/hydrogen peroxide soak and I'm totally grossed out by how much it's bubbling! I'm guessing being an eternity band probably gets it grubbier easier!
@Mrs. High Heels: Thanks! I'm soaking my rings now and am planning on going ring-less until my finger clears up and then hopefully everything will be fine!

@Mrs. High Heels: @mrsjyw: Okay girls, I need some advice. I did the vinegar/hydrogen peroxide trick and didn't wear my ring for 5 days. My finger was MOSTLY healed, but definitely still a little red. I put my rings back on Sunday morning and by Sunday evening, my finger was itching again! Do you think it's because I didn't let my finger fully heal? Because I didn't soak my ringers long enough (only soaked them for about 1.5 hours)? Or that I have another problem??

@mrsjyw: Okay, thanks! I soaked my rings AGAIN overnight this time and I might even try the "boiling" method and then I'll definitely wait until my finger is totally back to normal before putting them on again and HOPEFULLY that will work!!! Thank you!

My fingers get like this because i have eczema, which is made worse by water. Is your ring white gold? I wonder if the rhodium plating wore off and the alloy in the underlying metal is irritating you

@blackbird: Hmmm! My engagement ring is white gold and the plating is definitely wearing off. Maybe once my finger heals, I'll try wearing JUST my wedding band (platinum) first and if that is fine, putting my engagement ring back on and seeing what happens. Thanks!

DH gets this...mainly if water/any moisture gets trapped under his wedding ring. If he uses lotion and puts his ring back on it gets bad too. I think he makes sure his hand is completely dry before putting it back on. It can turn into a pretty nasty rash for him if he doesn't stay on top of it. He actually doesn't wear his ring a lot because he works in a lab and washed his hands all the time. He usually just wears it when we go out.
My MIL had to stop wearing her ring a long time ago because she got such terrible rashes!

@debbiei8: Hmm... I wonder if moisture could be an issue for me too? I'm not sure! When I put my rings back on, I'll make sure I don't have any lotion on them first!!

I've had this before, and mine was a yeast rash caused by water. I have a channel set band, and it's really hard to keep dry. I actually have switched to wearing a different ring, because mine make my finger hurt! Sad, but true

@Adira: maybe like other people have mentioned you could give your fingers a break for a few days? Just let them air out a bit? That always helps my DH's finger.

@Adira: I had this problem a few months back and I asked the jeweler who made my wedding band about it. He said it could be from stuff building up on it and suggested soaking it overnight in rubbing alcohol. I did that and I haven't had a problem since. I also agree with others that you may need to have it re dipped if it's white gold because the nickel might be causing you some irritation.

My engagement ring is but my wedding band is white gold. He told me it would be fine for both.

Update!
It's totally the white gold! I stopped wearing my engagement ring (white gold) and continued to wear my wedding band (platinum) and haven't had any issues! I recently added my engagement ring back to the mix and within a few days, my finger started itching again!!
