I have never dyed an Easter egg or done anything related to Easter, but my sister and her kids are coming up to our house this weekend, so I thought it would be a fun activity for the kids to do! Anyone have a good guide/good tips on how to do it?
(Like I literally have no idea what it entails--do you hard boil the eggs and then peel them? Or do you decorate the shell? What do you decorate with?)

You boil the eggs, and then you dye the eggs with the shells on!
You can buy kits and stuff, but truthfully I never buy them, they're a waste of money!
Do you have water, liquid food coloring (or gel works too) and vinegar? Then you're set! It normally says on the package of your food dye, how many drops to use.

Same as what MrsBrewer said.
You can also write on the hard boiled egg with a crayon, then put in the dye, and then it shows through the dye. We always did ones with our names. Stickers would be good for LO too.

Stickers are a great idea! I was imagining glitter too but something tells me that would be a disaster with Lo.

@hilsy85: Yep! Also when you dump the vinegar/water/dye mixture down the sink when you are done, make sure to rinse your sink right away!! I forgot this part once, and we had a white porcelain sink, well......it was blue for a couple weeks!! Oops!!!

Make sure you add the vinegar to your dye mixture! Otherwise, the colors are not as vibrant.

@hilsy85: We always use glass bowls so the color doesn't stick to regular dishes. We had white growing up. Then just used big spoons to get the eggs out.

Bringing this back up, because I was about to ask the same!
I saw something on Pinterest about putting the egg in a wire whisk so younger kids can dunk easier... Awesome! Except, how do you get the freaking egg out without getting dye all over your hands? And wouldn't extracting the egg result in messing up the wet dye? It doesn't seem like such a smart idea anymore...

Also, I've been doing the food dye + vinegar for the last 3 years, and the color is SO pale. Do we just need more dye? More vinegar?
I have nothing against store bought dyes if they're super bright and awesome, but I'm bored of the pale dyes

@hilsy85: If you crack your eggs and roll them around on the table a little before dying (and don't food dye on your eggs), you get this cool effect

@swurlygurl: I would add more dye or get the gel food dyes, rather than the liquid ones. I think it you did the whisk thing, you would be getting it all over your hands. I would just prepare for a mess. Lots of paper towels and newspaper and let the kids have fun!

I went for the dip dye you get at Target, super cheap and easy (I bought the ones with cups so I could just toss them.) E had a blast for sure, lay down some old newspapers, and just let them go all out!
hardboil eggs, leave shell on.

@hilsy85: I bought a dye kit already, but my friend just used shaving cream + food coloring with her son & raved about it. Apparently it's a little easier for the little ones! I'd steer clear of glitter if you plan to eat them after! It gets on everything when you peel them!

@swurlygurl: not really! It only takes a super thin layer. Plus, they sell big shaving cream cans at the dollar store.

@photojane: This was the method I was going to use (whip cream is also an alternative if kids will put it in their mouth) if we did them this year.
