We spent a weekend in Munich when my son was 2. The Chinesischer Turm beer garden was a nice place to spend the afternoon. We at lunch at Lowenbraustuben with a friend, and if the weather is nice, it would be a great place to eat outside! Also, go watch the surfers in the Eisbach, it's pretty mesmerizing!

As for nearby places to visit, in Austria, Salzburg and Innsbruck are close and Vienna is a 3-4 hour train ride. Zurich/other places in Switzerland would also be options. And of course, you could always look at flights for destinations a bit further away.

As for things to bring, other than the usual stuff, maybe medications? I mean, you can always get them at a pharmacy, but it's nice to have medications you are familiar with.

I was also going to suggest medication (particularly if your kid is used to liquid advil, for example) and some food. I always bring cheerios and applesauce pouches.

Your LO would probably like the Glockenspiel. We enjoyed getting food from the Viktualienmarkt and then finding a place to picnic. Definitely try the honey wine. And our favorite beer garden was Augustiner-Keller

@MrsBucky: I guess your best bet for exposing LO to the language is by meeting other kids. So I would hit up the playgrounds.

Munich has an amazing zoo called the Tierpark Hellabrunn . You can get there by public transport. Munich has a great public transportation system which routes in the '72 Olympics. There's an Aquarium ( Sea Life )right by the Olympia Park . On the other side of the street there's the BMW museum which would also be fun. There's a transportation devison of the German museum which my LO loved and it's usually not too crowed so it's great to let the kids check things out themselves. It also has an indoor playground so it's great for a rainy day.

On a sunny day you should definitely hit the Englischen Garten and definitely hit the Eisbach . Lots of free space to roam around. There's a beer garden at the Chineser Turm .

A great beergarden to check out with LO is Hirschgarten because there is a deer park right next to it and a playground. You can actually bring your own food to all beergardens you only have to buy the drinks.

Outside of Munich there's the Wildpark Poing which is also a zoo but with local animals, so deer, sheep, pigs, hogs, wolves, owls etc. It is also home to one of the biggest playgrounds I have ever seen.

You can take the train (called the BOB - Bayrische Oberlandbahn) to visit Tegernsee on which one can take little water taxis. A great place to eat is the Tegernseer Bräustüberl.

There are also more lakes around Munich like Starnberger See and Ammersee on which one can take a boat which is always fun. You can combine Ammersee with a trip to the Kloster Andechs which has an amazing view over the lake there's also a restaurant/beergarden.

Like others have said Salzburg is only a short train ride away. I don't really know details about what would be kid friendly there.
