DS will be two in a few weeks and he still nurses three times a day on average, all at his request. I'm not particularly eager to wean anytime soon, and I don't foresee DS self-weaning anytime in the near future. I just never imagined that I would be BFing a two-year old. If you nursed this long, how much longer did you keep it up and how did you know it was time to stop?

We nursed until about 25 months. I just wasn't enjoying it anymore and it was really messing with his sleep still (multiple MOTN wakings, early morning waking, and insistence on me nursing him every night before bed). I cut out sessions over two or three weeks and he did pretty well. I actually liked weaning at that age because I felt like I could explain what was happening and he could understand.

No experience with weaning but we're in the exact same situation. LO is almost two and nursing 3 - 4 times a day. I think I'm going to encourage her to skip one of her daytime feeds going forward so we're down to 3 on the regular. I'm also not necesarrily eager to wean her but I do wonder when she'll want to stop. If I had to guess I'd think our bedtime nursing will be the last to go.

@joyfulkiwi: That's a great idea about being able to explain it to him. I think DS could understand pretty soon. I still enjoy it for the most part (DS is super active, so it's a nice cuddly time for us), but sometimes he gets really whiny about it and I just want my body to myself! Did weaning help with your son's sleep?
@jerricabenton: Our bedtime nursing will probably be the last to go, too. We'll have to keep each other posted on what happens!

Not quite as long, but at 18 months I was pregnant and nursing was very painful. She had some bad allergies for about a week and just could not breathe out of her nose. She'd try to nurse and get so frustrated
so we'd try, she'd eventually give up, and we'd move on to stories. A few nights of this and that was it. I was ready but also sad that it just snuck up on us.

@Katrocap: yes! She's currently reading a book while nursing haha. I definitely think as she gets older she's more interestedin doing other things and eventually she just won't want to take a break to nurse. I hope it'll be that smooth. I think it's a little harder to encourage weaning when you go for s long time because it's so ingrained in their little lives.

I nursed til LO 2 was a little over 17 months. She just wasn't that interested anymore and I knew I wanted to try to conceive soon.

We're still nursing at 26 months (and 25 weeks pregnant) and I don't see weaning in our immediate future. For the last while we've only been nursing three times a day (morning, naptime and bedtime) but Miss A will happily forgo nursing if we're not home or have a change in routine). I'm really not sure how the future will look for our nursing relationship but I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it!

At two he had gone back to 2-3 times a day but by 2.5 or so we were back to just before bed. By his third birthday I was over it. DH had to take over bedtime for a week or so but afterwards he rarely asked again.

My mother BFed me and my sister until we were around 3, when we started to not want to BF anymore. My youngest sister hit that stage at 2.5. I think as long as you are happy to keep going, your LO will self-wean eventually. I guess at around 3.5 I'd start to think about weaning a child myself if he/she wasn't making any moves.

I bf all through my second pregnancy and was just not into the whole tandem nursing thing but didn't want it to be like LO was replaced by the new baby so I decided to continue until he was 2. Before the baby arrived he was nursing just before nap and bed and after the baby he dropped the bedtime session. Right after he turned 2 he got a little cold so we continued until about 25 months. He was not happy to give it up but was over it after like 2 days. By that point nursing him was just weird for me and I did not like it so I knew it had to stop. I think we both enjoy his pre-nap snuggles a lot more now.

@Katrocap: it helped a little bit but what really worked was getting him his own bed. Although I don't think he'd sleep all night if he were still nursing.
