For my 1st two pregnancies in 2012 and 2016 I did the regular 1 hour glucose screening and did not fast. For this pregnancy I was told my doctors office now only offers the 2 hour fasting test which actually diagnoses gestational diabetes and no further testing will be needed.
Is this common now? I just got done with it a little while ago and its nice to have food in my tummy after starving all morning

My OB only does the 2 hour test (first pregnancy in 2012 and second in 2016). I questioned him with my first and he says he likes the 2 hour because a lot of women end up failing the 1 hour but passing the three hour. Why end up doing it twice when it can just be done once.

The 2 hour is so much better. It's diagnostic so no need for anything else whether you pass or fail. If I get pregnant again I will be asking for the 2 hour

My office did the 1 hour first, but that was 2 years ago. I don't know if I would opt for the 2 hour if I'm going to pass the 1 hour as easily as I did last time; but I might not have a choice when I finally get pregnant

Yeah since I have always taken the 1 hour I would have opted for that but for people that fail or and pass the 3 hour it makes sense why they would rather do the 2 hour test.

@Sams Mom: @Mrsbells: i had gd and can't imagine failing the 1 hour and then having to do the 3 hour. The 2 hour was awful enough.
If you really don't want to do the 2 hour you can always opt to take your blood sugar levels for 2 weeks
Eta: there are a lot of pregnant women that "pass" the 1 hour and still have gd. Then they're never diagnosed and give birth to a baby with blood sugar issues or who has problems during birth because they're lga.

They tested him every hour for the first 4 hours and he never had a problem, so hopefully that means I didn't have undiagnosed GD. -
@Sams Mom: by no means am I saying every larger than average baby was the product of undiagnosed gd. Some women just have larger babies!
But with having a larger baby I'd opt for the 2 hour just to make sure -
@MamaBear87: well I already did my 2 hour test today. I think its more of a psychological thing just knowing I had to fast. But I guess the results will be more reassuring

I asked for the 2hr but my doctors office doesn’t offer it so I’m opting into the 3hr since I had GD last time.

@Ms.Mermaid: if it had been easy for me to get pregnant this time I'd probably be upset if I had to do the 3 hour
. Now I'll just be glad to be pregnant, and likely go with testing for 2 weeks if the 2 hour isn't offered

@MamaBear87: The 3 hour sounds better to me than testing for two weeks but now I’m worried about how much sick time I’m having to use. I should be able to work remotely during the test but it’s just a lot of my day.

@Mrsbells: you test your blood sugar 4 times a day with a glucose meter, when you wake up and an hour after each meal. So finger prick and then put the blood droplet in the test strip.

@MamaBear87: oh I see. I dont think I know anyone who has done it. I'm too squeamish to prick myself plus I am so forgetful I could never keep up
