Planning WAY ahead for a June birthday but, why not. What is your favorite camera to gift to a 5 year old? My daughter has shown a lot of interest in taking pictures so I would like to get her her own camera. I'd like something with a removable memory card so we can print the pictures but not something that will break the first time she drops it...does this exist?

Welll....it isn't a digital camera, but my niece and nephew are obsessed with my Fujifilm instax mini camera. The film cartridges aren't cheap but occasionally I get a deal and buy big packs. Since it's point and shoot, even my 3 year old can do it, but I help her since I don't trust her to ration the film.

@Anagram: yeah, my kid is a serial shooter. I go to take a picture on my phone and it says memory is full...full of random shots while at Target....

My son does really well with my old Canon Powershot. Another idea is to get an old phone, and let her use that, my son has several cameras that are really just old phones of my husband's.

We just have my 3.5 year old a kidizoom for Christmas and she loves it. Seems very durable. The resolution is pretty poor and the pictures are often blurry. It's a great starter camera for our daughter and I figure if she gets the hang of it I will give her my old canon power shoot in a couple years when I can trust her not to drop it immediately.
I got ours for like twenty bucks so it seems worth it. An older kid might be annoyed/frustrated by the photo quality though. -

My DH has the Olympus TG-4 and loves it, but it's much spendier at around $380. But our 3-year-old has been able to use it for awhile and it stands up to her just fine. We got her a Kidizoom for Christmas and it's definitely a toy rather than a serious camera, so if your daughter is really interested in taking pictures a rugged P&S is probably a better choice.

@looch: that's what we have! It's tough enough for a four year old
also doesn't seem as prone to Bad Things happening if you press a button without thinking as a smartphone. We've had it for a while and it's technically not B's camera, but if they're not super expensive these days I'd definitely recommend it.

We got this kid's version of a go pro for my 4 year old. Indoor pics arent the best but it also takes video and you can take it in the water!

@Silva: That's what we got my 3.5 year old too. My husband is a photographer and he seemed OK with it for her age. If it's something she wants to do more of, we can upgrade her to a point and shoot as she gets a little older.

It's digital and also prints like a regular Polaroid. We haven't used it much yet so I can't speak to its robustness, but LO thinks it's pretty neat!

@Anagram: I am thinking of getting one for my son, as a surprise for vacation, since what he's using now is on the fritz, but I've never used one...does it only take photos in the printing mode, or does it also function as a digital camera?

@looch: we gave her my old Powershot and she loves it. She is figuring out the buttons and what to/not to change. She takes lots of blurry pictures of our feet right now.

I want to get the Vtech Kidizoom digital camera for D (4yo). It gets great reviews and it's not that expensive.

@mediagirl: That's great! Ours doesn't hold the charge any longer so I am on the fence about what to do next. He has an old phone of my husband's that has his "music" on it and it also takes photos, so he's got that for now. He asked for a camera that prints pictures, he specifically said where you take a picture and the paper comes out of the camera so now I am considering an Instax or polaroid.

@looch: I got an Instax for Christmas and love it. I brought it to a family party with all the five year old cousins and they had a blast although the film is expensive for long term use.
