That is insanity. What year is this?!
My husband and I are considering adoption, and there is a wealth of resources out there about integrating and maintaining the integrity of a child's culture and heritage within your family.

They allow interracial adoptions all the time, how is this different and how does the clinic know the mother won't find ways to expose her child to their culture? The final decision shouldn't be the clinic's.

Ex-f*ckin-scuse me? I am having a mixed baby in October and this makes my blood boil. Sadly I've heard comments like this before and I proceeded to rip them a new pooper.

@Happygal: I agree that race in adoption does matter, but this isn't adoption. The clinic should have no say in the decisions of the mother.

@TemperanceBrennan: I know, but the director is attempting to use the same types of points that I've seen in the discussions about adoption. The author points out why the two topics are separate in the article:

It is true that Alberta law requires caseworkers handling adoption applications to consider “the benefits to the child of maintaining, wherever possible, the child’s familial, cultural, social and religious heritage.” However, this is one of several factors to be considered and, unlike the donor matching policy, adoption policies do not require a rigid adherence to ethnicity or cultural background, especially in situations where there is no clear or established benefit to a specific child.

@Freckles: I read these articles over the weekend and was similarly appalled by the directors opinion. This is especially acute for me because my eventual LO will be a "rainbow baby". It is important to note though that the clinic is 100% private (receives no provincial support and no public research monies) and so they can make whatever ridiculous rules they please.

The clinic is making a big assumption about the mother or a couple using a donor of a different race or ethnicity. From what I gather the only reason to oppose something like this is to assume the parent(s) would not teach the child about part of their culture. From what I gather here and have seen in real life that is simply not the case. Parents of mixed race children are acutely aware of how society views their children and they incorporate all of the children's culture into their lifestyle.

@loki: We definitely have our moments, but this is really all kinds of awful!

Thanks for clarifying, I find it so diffcult to even begin to think about what I would do in the siutuation of needing a donor. But I do think that this decision should remain in the hands of the parent(s) to be, not the clinic.
