It was sooo bad. I had no idea.

Worse worse worse. She's been STTN for a couple of months now and I'm still scarred. The sleep deprivation was what finally tipped the scales to no more babies!

Omg way WORSE. I knew we would of course be lacking on sleep, I mean hello, new baby=no sleep. I was not prepared to still be this sleep deprived going on 7 months. I think I was thinking I will hopefully have a baby that loves sleep and unfortunately, it's quite the opposite! Like @lawbee11, this no sleep is pushing me towards one and done. I apparently have high sleep needs and I'm not sure I could do this again!

It's both worse and better. I cannot believe how little sleep we get and how tired I feel most days. But better in the sense that I would not have thought a human being could function for this long on this little sleep, but somehow we're surviving. I'm back to work next month and am not super sure how that's all going to work out.

Worse. So, So much worse. I knew that I wouldn't get much sleep *for a while*, but I thought it would just be a month or two. I didn't know that I would eventually have a 16 month old that still had tons of sleep issues.

16 months of never, ever, ever getting to sleep until you wake up on your own.....no, I didn't know to expect that.

WORSE, WORSE, WORSE! But much better with baby #2.

I didn't really know what to expect, so it was BAD. Plus Xander was jaundiced and I had to feed him every 2 hours, even overnight, so it was really hard.

My sleep was worse in late pregnancy than in the newborn days, so I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't a walk in the park, but I think from 7-9 months I was up about every hour in the night, and my son started sleeping 2 1/2-3hr stretches from the beginning, so I was getting more sleep!

I got lucky and had a great sleeper who started STTN at 5 weeks. So it wasn't as bad as I had anticipated. What was way worse were the sleep regressions after I went back to work. I remember the 4-month and the 8/9 month sleep regressions were particularly bad. Up several times a night for an hour at a time, only to have to get up and go function at work? Yeah. Totally unprepared for that.

The first month was awful with LO 1. Much better the second time.

@ellewoods84: If we were going to have another (which we're not), it would have to be min 3.5-4 year age gap. That level of sleep deprivation + a toddler sounds like my idea of torture.

I didn't fully understand the scope of what it all meant. It was worse than I imagined. I think of the first couple of weeks with a newborn as Parent Initiation

Life changingly horrible. ! She is 17 months and still wakes twice, but I am happy with that (in comparison). Now DH takes one wakeup. Ugh.

It was worse than I expected. 18 months pp and I still have some days of bad sleep but I don't feel lethargic or grumpy. I guess my body just got use to it.

Yup another vote for awful! I thought it would be bad, but you just can't comprehend how tired it is possible to be. I have such a newfound respect for sleep!

The first year wasn't that bad. It's been the regressions in year two that have kicked my butt! Maybe because I expected it in the beginning but now I'm blindsided by it!

i'm with @birdofafeather: . i had read enough horror stories about the newborn days that i wasn't surprised. for me, my LO waking up at 4am during months 5 through 11 were absolutely killer. and transitioning to a toddler bed.

Someone close to me just had her first baby 3 weeks ago, and she told me that she is MORE rested now, because she just sleeps whenever her baby sleeps during the day. She guessed that she has been getting at least 12 hours of sleep a day since her baby was born!

Worse x 10000000!!! Omg I cannot believe how we got through it. My problem was that I couldn't sleep when he slept because I was very anxious all the time so instead of sleep, I'd worry about something.. and to be honest DS didn't sleep all that much during the day as a newborn. It took more than a year PP before I felt like I was starting to get over it.
