Have you flown with a big stroller, like an UBV, Bugaboo or Stokke? Baggage check or gate check? Did the stroller survive the trip? Did you have a bag for it?
We are traveling tomorrow and I really want to take our Bugaboo, but I don't have a bag for it and I'm really terrified that it will be broken. I may take our Maclaren at the last minute...

I would bag your expensive stroller. They throw the strollers around, or they throw luggage on top of it.

I would not trust the airline with that expensive of a stroller without a bag protecting it, gate or bag checked.

@bunnylove08: the bag new is €140 and we leave tomorrow. I tried to buy a used bag this week, but it was the wrong style for my stroller. Ugh.

I have only ever flown with my UBV because I prefer the extra room in the basket and don't like taking umbrella strollers to airports. I don't have a bag, I just gate checked the stroller and it was fine. Not a scratch on it. This may vary by airline, I flew Virgin Atlantic both times and my stroller came out perfectly fine.

@lamariniere: I also think that if you make sure to gate check it so it doesn't go into the hold until the every last minute, this drastically reduces any potential for tossing it around.

Are you travelling with any coats? I would try to at least put it in a large clear plastic bag and I would wrap the coats around the pressure points.

@lamariniere: we traveled with our Uppababy gluxe and i forgot to take our cup holder off and it snapped off and the stroller was definitely got a little dirty.
Is there a reason why you want to bring the bugaboo? Bigger storage?

@looch: I'm going to see if we can get a big bag at the airport, if we take it. No coats though, we are going somewhere somewhat warm. 
@bunnylove08: my husband will be working all week so I will be alone with both LOs during the day. So I figure it will be easier to use the bugaboo because we have a roller board for it and there is more storage, whereas with the Maclaren we don't have the roller board and the basket is tiny. Normally we take the Maclaren when we travel, but since I'll be alone so much, I want the comfort of the bigger stroller.

@lamariniere: I would gate check and put a bag over your bugaboo.
If you have a universal attachment board, i know some parents have attached it to an umbrella stroller. I know the Lascal Buggy Board can be attached to the mcclarren.

we flew recently with the UB Cruz frame and Mesa car seat (since we needed a car seat at the destination). we gate-checked both with no bag and they were both fine after both flights! loved having the big basket for walking through the airport

I flew twice with our big stroller, and we flew on Delta and AA--gate checked it both times and it was fine. I did put the car seat (this was when LO was little so we did the car seat in our B-Ready frame) in one of the cheapie orange gate check bags and that did the trick.
No issues other than black smudges on the gate check bag.

I haven't flown with my UBV.
@shopaholic had an issue flying with her umbrella last week even though it was in a bag. The airline broke the wheels straight off. After seeing that I don't want to fly with my "good" stroller.
Have a great trip BTW. Barcelona is my favorite.

@bunnylove08: I know which one you are talking about, but the one we have is bugaboo specific, so it won't work with the Maclaren.
@nana87: @Anagram: that's a relief to hear. Does your stroller break down into 2 pieces? Mine folds either as one huge unit or I can remove the seat and fold the frame separately. I'm thinking it would be better as two pieces.
@oliviaoblivia: ack! Maybe she'll chime in. I wonder if the airline pays for damage?

I wouldn't do it unless you're going to take off the wheels and put them in a zippered bag. We did it once with our Bugaboo Cameleon. I'd put the wheels in the drawstring bag under the seat, folded the chassis, and put it in a plastic gate check bag (the seat was in a separate bag). It came back to us at the destination gate with the bag ripped up and a wheel missing. I stayed on the jetway begging people to check the belly of the plane til it showed up! Huge hassle and we nearly lost part of the stroller! I'd be too worried to try it again.
Since then I've taken the Maclaren, even though I much prefer the bugaboo...and for my last trip alone with the two kids, I ended up getting a baby zen Yoyo, which you can carry on and out in the overhead bin. Well worth it if you travel a lot!
Also....we sold our travel bag for checking the stroller - it was too bulky and then we couldn't use the stroller in the airport, so it was useless for us once our daughter got too big to carry through the airport comfortably.

@PinkElephant: wow the stoller looks amazing but it seems really small. would you recommend it for a 2 year old who is about 30 lbs?

I would definitely do whatever necessary to take the Bugaboo- even if you have to purchase the bag for peace of mind. Less stress and worries = yes!

@lamariniere: I've flown with the big as well as the umbrella stroller. We checked our big stroller as bulky luggage. That was great since it got handled with care. Also they might be able to wrap it in foil if you don't have a bag. We just carried LO through the airport in a carrier or his carseat or let him walk.

@bunnylove08: I use it for my nearly 2.5 year old. She's closer to 25 lbs but of fairly average height and fits in it easily. The stroller handles equally well when I'm using it for her as it does when I put my 6 month old daughter in it. I think the weight limit is something like 40 pounds. I expect she will be able to use it comfortably for another year in terms of height.
The fact that it has one handle makes it so much more usable for me than a Maclaren or other typical umbrella stroller - I need one handed steering!

UPDATE: I took the bugaboo and we gate checked it with no bag. I broke it down into two pieces and removed the belly bar and the canopy and put those two items in our carry on. The stroller made it to our destination in perfect condition! Phew!
