Which is better for potty training, the little toilet or the seat you can put on top of the big toilet (with a stepstool underneath)? I have the Oxo seat and a stepstool, but my mom is insisting that I should also have a little toilet, so DS can go on there himself and doesn't need our help to get up to the toilet.
Has anyone used only the training seat on top of the big toilet with success?

DD turned two in July and has ZERO interest in the little potty we've had for months. I think we'll have to get a seat for the big potty.

How old is he? We started before Liam turned 2 and he was just too little to use a seat on the big toilet. He liked the little potty and now that he's 2.5, he only uses the big toilet with a step stool and no seat on it.

We actually bought a new toilet seat that had a little one, but money ever spent!

We have both. Outside playtime you can use the little potty. Emergencies you can sprint and grab it. The seat is nice too because when they are starting to better understand, it's there.

We have a little seat but he's not shown a ton of interest in it yet. He is very interested in watching us use the big toilet, though, so I might get a seat for it.

We have both but she definitely prefers the little potty for poops. Lucky me.

We also have both. We trained around 22 months (3 day method) and mostly used the chair because it was easier. I did leave the seat type out as an option so LO could also get used to seeing/trying it but she prefers the little potty chair (Bjorn).
When we are out in public/friends houses, she just uses the regular toilet (I just sit her on top of it towards the front and hold her steady). I didn't want to get into the habit of having to tote around a travel seat or potty chair, etc. It's worked out well!

I refuse to clean out a little potty. We got the on toilet seat when she turned one and have gotten her used to it so that when the time comes she won't be scared.

We actually used neither!
Which is to say we bought a little potty and LO sat on it repeatedly but never actually went. At school they have toddler sized potties that flush so the real potty was more appealing. She was able to balance fine without the extra seat. The step stool was enough for her to get up and down on her own. I think it depends on your kiddo.

We tried the seat but LO was terrified of it! She won't sit on it so we got her a little potty instead. Still not potty trained though

We've tried a few things and while we haven't committed fully to potty training yet, we've found a really nice toilet seat at Home Depot that has a child seat built in. It is very sturdy, which was our main issue with the set on top seats- he was terrified of falling in! So with a small step stool on the side, he can climb on the seat by himself without any problems.

@lemondrop: ohh I never knew about these combo seats! Maybe I will order one off amazon.. My LO is trained but prefers the potty chair but I am tired of cleaning it out. Thanks for sharing!!

We have that toilet seat, @lemondrop! I loved it so much, I bought one for my parent's house, where my son stays a lot of the time.
It's great, it is always there and when you're done with it, it pops off.
