I've given up caffeine a few times outside of pregnancy and it usually takes me about a week to adjust. If he wasn't drinking diet Mountain Dew he might be missing a ton of sugar too which can also cause irritability. Cutting carbs takes longer for me to adjust to than caffeine. I hope it gets easier for him and you.

I have always heard sugar is much harder to quit and everyone's body is different. I went off caffeine 3 years ago and never looked back. It probably took about a week for my headaches to be gone.

I definitely agree that caffeine is easier to detox from over sugar. Sugar probably took me two weeks to feel normal, but months before the cravings had stopped. But I eventually realized I'm not the kind of person who can do low-sugar lifestyle. After I went back on sugar (like 6 months later) I would go on crazy sugar benders! So my psychology probably plays into my experience. Caffeine was probably 3-4 days of headaches and a week of wanting caffeine, and then I was over it.
