We don't watch Sons of Anarchy but every time I mention the name Gemma, people have a crazy negative connotation due to the character on this show. My husband is OBSESSED with this name and calls our baby Gemma and I really want to be able to give it to him because I feel like he loves it more than I love any names I love... but the Sons of Anarchy connection really puts me off of it. Would this bother you? Did you have a similar experience when naming your LO?

I've never watched that show so it doesn't remind me of it!
My LO's name is a minor character in Twilight and I hesitated for like, a minute about it, and also a character on Grimm, but we went ahead. And no one has ever said anything about either.

I like the name but it does make me think of Sons of Anarchy. So do all the Jacksons though too!

I watch SOA so I would not be able to disassociate it with the show. I hated the character.

I watched SOA, and I still love the name Gemma. Yes she was an evil woman, but if you love the name I would go for it! It's a beautiful name.

I feel like this is a limited time problem. Right now everyone associates Gemma with SOA but in 10 years when your daughter is in school? I doubt many people will (and certainly not her friends).

Never watched SOA and I obviously have no problem with it, it's high on our baby name list too!

@Mae: i totally agree. i'm just so worried that immediately after her birth everyone will be like "do you watch sons of anarchy?" the minute we tell people her name! That seems to be happening now. I'm not worried long term but I can see myself being annoyed by it when she's little haha.

@lovehoneybee: interesting... Gemma has been popular in the UK & Australia for a loooong time and I think it's finally starting to make it's way over here. I have a feeling it'll be pretty common soon but you can never really predict, I guess!

I know a beautiful little Gemma at my son's daycare, and I don't really know anyone who watches SOA! I've never seen it myself. So I associate it with my son's adorbs little school girlfriend

I think it's a really pretty name. I've never seen Sons of Anarchy, it's not really my type of show, so I wouldn't be too bothered about the association. As others have pointed out, in a few years no one will make that connection.

I've never seen this show, but I think the name is adorable. If you really like it and obviously your husband loves it, I say do it! Like others have said, I think it will be a distant memory soon. My daughters name is an old cartoon character and I thought people might say stuff about it, but so far in 10 months it's never been mentioned.

The show is over now and in 10 years, no one will even remember Gemma from SOA! She's gonna have her name for the rest of her life....don't choose it based on a fad show that will only be remembered for so long.

i don't want SOA, so my un-biased opinion is that it is a beautiful name. And i think your SOA connection will fade quickly once a new association is made with this name - your daughter!

Never watched the show so I don't make any association with the name. I think no matter what name you choose people are always going to associate it with something.

I agree with others that the SoA association is only going to get weaker and weaker now that the show is over. Plus, while I never watched it, I know that the character Gemma was played by Katey Sagal, who is a GREAT association, IMO.

Never watched the show, love the name. I only know one little Gemma and her father is English.

I think if you love the name you should use it! I don't think too many people will associate it with SOA, especially now that the show is over. I know this isn't quite the same, but I have a dog named Jax and no one has ever asked if he was named after the character.
