Now that LO is turning 4, she's getting invited to a lot of her school friends bday parties. I know their parents by name and face and we talk at school events but that's it.
Her friend is having a "theme" party. Let's say for this example... Pete the Cat. Should I get her a Pete the Cat themed gift? or something else...and if it's something else...what? I don't really know what she likes.
I'm stressing way too much on a 4 year old's gift..

I just get something my own kid would like and include a gift receipt. At 4, they all pretty much have the same interests anyway.

If she likes Pete the Cat enough to have a themed party, she's probably got a lot of the "stuff" already....so I'd avoid it. But you can always do a gift receipt, or something else cat-themed if you think it's cats in general that she's into.
Recently I've been buying four year old girls Melissa & Doug Jewlery kits, dress up wings, pipsqueak marker sets, Crocodile Creek floor puzzles, etc. If you really want to cater to a child's interest, you could ask DD what she does with this friend at school - dress up? art? - and go from there.

I would avoid it and get something different. We had a Pete party and we received a few dupe Pete gifts.

Hrm, this didn't even occur to me, to get a gift that goes with the theme. I typically gift really neutral stuff though, you never know what the parents allow.

Our four year old go to gift was "Spot it" and a book or two in the theme of the party.
Our five year old go to gift is "Trouble" and a gift card.

We had a Paw Patrol party at 4 and a Frozen party at 5 - we got many gifts that related to the them for both.

@MamaG: That was mine too, love Spot IT. I gifted the alphabet ones and those story cards that don't have words.
I need to get on the go to gift for this year, I am thinking Rory's Story Cubes.

Buy something with a gift receipt so they can go back and return it
