Looking for any mamas who used one. My daughter is coming early and I want to be prepared in case she is a lazy nurser. My son was a 34weeker and spent 3 weeks in the NICU just for feeding growing. He was a big guy and it seemed really over precautions. I never figured out how to get off pumping and just breastfeed, so this time I don't want to introduce the bottle and want to try this SNS system. Hoping she nurses like a champ and there's no worries.

I used SNS systems for both babies because my milk came in late. They were a pain to clean but helpful!

Did you use the one with the bottles? Or the one with like an IV bag looking thing!? LOL @autumnlove:

@autumnlove: yes the medela one is the one I'm looking at. There's a 17.50 one on Amazon or a $45 for the bag one with like two tubes, and it uses a bag! So I wasn't sure if one was better!

I used one for a while, it was a pain. Definitely make an appointment with an IBCLC to get you on the right track!

A friend of mine used the SNS system for about 2 months, and her LO was born at 42 weeks! He was a lazy nurser. I know the whole process was extremely challenging for her and she was basically spending the majority of her time feeding and pumping. Her system (no idea what brand) was a little box that she filled with BM and hung around her neck and then there were different sized tubes that the baby could drink from while nursing. I know she worked closely with an LC. I hope your LO doesn't have any feeding issues!

We used the cheap Medela one for a while for different reasons. It was given to us by the KC. I wouldn't buy one now and make sure to work with an LC to troubleshoot any issues.

I tried with my LO who was a 36 weeker. I don't know if I just didn't use enough tape but I could never keep it in place and LO would nurse less with it on. So I kept pumping after feeds to stimulate my supply, but never supplemented. (He wouldn't take the syringe either). He was having enough wets so it was fine, although he was a slow gainer.
He is a huge 10 mo now who still prefers little snacks over big meals!

@jedeve: how did your routine work for nursing and pumping? I'm worried about nursing and then pumping and then baby being ready to eat again before I have more milk!

@BabyPenguinXO: I just pumped right after I fed him. He only nursed for about twenty minutes, I would pump for 10-15, and then it would be an hour or hour and a half before I had to feed him again. Our issue was he was so sleepy, not that he was crying for more, so he never complained per se.
I think if it has been my first, it would have been stressful nursing and pumping. But since it was my second (and I had help with my toddler) I knew to expect nothing much more than feeding + couch time.

@jedeve: that's my fear I have a 17 month old! But he's really good and I'm staying with my mom for 6 weeks to have help because my Fiancé is working in another state 12 hours away. We are moving there after I'm recovered.
That's the issue I think I'll run into, is a lazy/sleepy nurser from being early and possibly jaundiced! I will have access to LCs so I guess for now I'll skip the SNS. With my first I pumped every 3 hours for the longest time because he was having NG tube feeds. And so this will be a bit different. I don't want her to get an NG tube right away and I want them to allow me to try and Feed her on demand. If she looses too much, then fine we can make a new plan. But even full term babies lose weight. My son wasn't tiny he was 6lbs 11oz and never got under 6 lbs.

@BabyPenguinXO: I wonder of it would be helpful to contact the lactation consultants at your hospital and explain the situation and your goals. Maybe starting a relationship before stress sets in would be advantageous. Good luck!

@Cole: I'm not sure. I think that might be hard cause last time there was quite a few at the hospital so it's hard to know who would be there. They were all helpful at first and then it became kind of, well, to get him home he has to be eating everything orally and it was kind of a push to use bottles

@Cole: it was! I felt supported at first and honestly I get it. We wanted to get home too... 22 days of NICU for learning to feed orally seems crazy! He was 34+3 and 6lbs 11oz. I feel like they treated him like a micro preemie.. I realize their weight loss is important but I should have advocated for us to feed on demand sooner, and said hey... If he loses too much we can stop.
