Have you, or do you know any one who has, been on a n HGTV or TLC type show? I love watching House Hunters, Buying and Selling, My First Place, type shows but I always wonder just how much is fake-- I know a lot of it is, but what parts? Same for all the wedding shows on TLC.
I know one girl who was on Say Yes to the Dress, ages ago, and I know someone who was chosen to be on House Hunters but they ended up not doing it because of timing. I want the inside scoop!

I don't know if this is true, but I heard that on House Hunter's they already purchased the home before going on the show, and sometimes have even moved in already...

@Bao: Yeah I've heard that too. Plus you can usually tell which one they buy because it's empty when they tour it, and the other houses aren't. I also heard sometimes the houses they tour aren't even on the market. But I don't know anyone whose done it.
The one girl I know who almost did had already purchased her house. They would have just toured other ones for sale.

I never have, but I have friends that were on reality shows - not the HGTV type though.
One friend was on "The Glass House", one was on "Beauty and the Geek", one was on "Kitchen Nightmares" and the other was on "Millionaire Matchmaker"

They said that you must already be in escrow. They film you touring the house you've already purchased. Then six months later or so, they come back and film your "we're now all moved in" segment, then they film you touring two other random houses. They got $300 I believe.
Now that I know the inside scoop, sometimes when I watch House Hunters I can totally tell which house they are going to pick because of the outfits they're wearing!! If they're wearing one outfit for two houses, I know they're going to choose the other house.

@Foodnerd81: I'm addicted to HGTV! I still watch House Hunters even though I know it's fake (I actually started watching after hearing it was staged).
I know people who have been on: Millionaire Matchmaker, Survivor, and The Voice. No wedding shows, though.

My big sister from my sorority is going to be on one sometime this year. It's a new show so I don't know the name. They came out and tore out a fireplace they couldn't ever get to stop leaking, and upgraded the kitchen and dining rooms.

@runnerd: yeah a) I used to live in LA, so lots of "actor" and musician friends and b) the casting directors keep sending reality show casting bulletins to our professional organizations email list.

My ex husband and I were on a local "House Hunters" type show. It was low budget and pretty much staged. We were told what we could and couldn't comment on, it had been sort of updated but I remember accidentally commenting on the awful pet smell. They also ask us to give feedback about how the sellers could rearrange furniture and accent pieces, then we were ask to come back a few weeks later. It was kind of fun

I've always wondered how much of the renovations on different HGTV shows is paid for by the shows or donated?
Holmes on Homes always seems to find more and more issues with the homes and they grow the scope of the project. Do the people really have big budgets to do everything?

@sunny: Yes love that! To me the Holmes show goes a little overboard on some of the work and the finishes aren't great.
