HB Book Club: Vote for October's Book!

OK, I'll start it up.

Here are my three choices; vote for your favorite! I'll leave it up till Monday afternoon since the weekend is coming.

A lot of us mentioned mystery so here's one
Visitation Street, by Ivy Pochoda
320 pgs

Two teenage girls escape the stifling heat of a July night in rough-and-tumble waterfront Red Hook, Brooklyn, by taking a moonlit paddle into the harbor. One washes up ashore, barely alive; the other disappears. As the locals are drawn together by the event, characters gradually reveal themselves in a mystery that is nothing short of riveting.

I've had this on my must read list for a while and seemed apt for a baby site book club.
The Light Between Oceans, by M. L. Stedman
352 pgs

After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a days journey from the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season and shore leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife, Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a babys cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby.

Tom, whose records as a lighthouse keeper are meticulous and whose moral principles have withstood a horrific war, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel has taken the tiny baby to her breast. Against Toms judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. When she is two, Tom and Isabel return to the mainland and are reminded that there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them.

This is spurred by discussion on the board of a extra "wife"!
Busy Woman Seeks Wife, by Annie Sanders
303 pgs

To a casual observer, Londoner Alex Hill is every inch the calm and collected executive of a global sportswear company. In reality, she's constantly frantic, with barely enough time to take out the trash. When her demanding mother, a 1960s style icon, has a bad fall and has to move in with her indefinitely, Alex realizes she needs someone more committed than a maid-what she needs is a wife. An ad in the local paper soon produces a young woman who seems both enthusiastic and capable. But something odd is definitely happening behind the scenes of Alex's new, perfectly ordered existence. Someone distinctly male is charming her mother as well as doing all the ironing. He's no one Alex would ordinarily ever notice, never mind date. But now she can't help wondering if her new "wife" could perhaps have husband potential...

I'm going to warn any IF-ers or people struggling with RPL - The Light Between Oceans may be a difficult book for you to read.

  32. BSB

hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts

@ShootingStar: Yeah, I had little twinge while reading the into of that book. Have you read it?

If it's chosen, I would, at least, try to to see if I can get through it. Sounds like a good book.

  33. regberadaisy

    GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts

@ShootingStar: @bluestriped bee: I'd hope the description would let people know the content. I really think it will be a good read but ended up picking one because I'm not sure I could handle it either even not as IFer.

If anything it would certainly make for some really good discussions!

  34. ShootingStar

    coconut / 8472 posts

@bluestriped bee: @locavore_mama: It's just...a little rough, I guess I'd say. It's a really interesting book and I'm sure will garner a good discussion. But the beginning could be especially hard for those struggling with TTC or miscarriages. The month before I got pregnant I was looking for something to read and my mom suggested it. She thought I'd like to read about another woman struggling to get pregnant and I was like WTF afterwards.

I'm not saying it shouldn't get chosen, I just wanted to throw it out there that some people should read with caution.

I'm torn between Oceans and Wife but I voted wife Can I join the club late?

  37. regberadaisy

    GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts

    @NaturallyCathy: it hasn't technically started!

  38. Bao

    GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts

I wanted to put a hold on the books so that I can get them in time to start reading. Well it won't let me request Visitation Street, but it will let me do all other books...I don't get it? It will stink if I can't participate this month.

  39. regberadaisy

    GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts

@Bao: weird! Visitation street is the only one that my library actually has in a ebook.
