How old is he? 3 lbs in 6 months seems like a very good gain for after age 1. I think my kids gained around 5 lbs a year between 12-24 months.

But to answer your original question, have you tried peanut butter? Whole fat yogurt is good too. I don't buy fat free or low fat anything. You could do smoothies that include whole milk or yogurt or avacado / peanut butter?

Oatmeal with cream, butter or olive oil on veggies, peanut butter or cream cheese on toast (maybe with butter underneath also), anything full fat dairy. My not- great eater likes yogurt drinks and will have them as a drink with her meal- Siggi's makes some that are not awful for sugar content and are whole milk.

@DesertDreams88: ah ok gotcha! I would def try the peanut butter, butter or olive oil on veggies, also parm cheese on veggies is good. full fat everything. lots of cheese if he likes it. try not to stress too much - if he eats well and is happy, he's probably just finding his curve. plus all that mobility now.

We did whole fat dairy and put olive oil and butter in everything. DS1 doesn't like to eat cheese (like cubes or slices) and doesn't like avocado, and only learned to like peanut butter recently at 2.5 years so I feel ya.

We did whole milk all day, he had a full fat yogurt for afternoon snack, we made risotto/rice porridges with butter, parm, and various meats and veggies, I made boxed Mac n cheese but put in extra butter and Parmesan, cheese pizza, and I made smoothies with full fat yogurt, milk, coconut oil, spinach, and fruit. I made chicken soup from scratch and didn't strain out the fat, when I cooked ground beef for spaghetti or tacos I didn't drain the fat, and made a lot of fried rice for dinner using olive oil and chopped meat and veggies and scrambled eggs. We also served a lot of eggs - scrambled, omelets, French toast (fried in coconut oil!) and stirred into just about anything I could add it to. For instance you can make a custard oatmeal - make oatmeal with water, but stir in butter, cream, and a beaten whole egg off the heat until incorporated, and put back on heat and stir vigorously until cooked through and add brown sugar and vanilla and raisins or whatever. We also make a cream of rice or grits the same way but savory with cheese and butter and beaten egg.

I stopped doing all that before he turned 2. He's right at 50% now and learning to enjoy food on his own (he was a reflux baby and just did not ever want to eat/drink anything).

@DesertDreams88: my LO dropped from about 80% to 3% within 18 months. The ped had us come in a few times for weight checks between 18 months and 24 years - although he wasn't really concerned. Just wanted to chime in, so you don't worry too much.

Like others, we did (and still do) whole milk, whole milk yogurts, cheeses etc. cooked veggies in butter and olive oil, add a bit of butter to all pasta dishes. Lots of rice (which was easy as LO has always loved rice and all carbs!). Lots of homemade pizzas for the carbs + cheese and fats.

For what it's worth, B gained 3lbs between 9 and 15 months too. But we did avocado oil, butter in all his veggies, mixed some cream in his milk, and let him have ice cream. Oh, and 10% fat yogurt.

Neither of my kids likes avocado but will eat it in a smoothie. Especially if you add in some cocoa powder. The chocolate and avocado go nicely together, strangely and it masks the avocado flavor of it. I do banana, whole milk, avocado, cocoa powder. My oldest calls it chocolate milk smoothie.

Oh now that DS will eat peanut butter (and we still have weeks he literally won't eat anything) we do peanut butter crackers or I send him into the yard with a spoonful of peanut butter, which he thinks is a huge treat. I never did this bc I forgot, but someone told me about sour cream in smoothies in lieu of yogurt because of the fat content. We DID do whipped cream on berries or pancakes or waffles (with a splash of vanilla and a tiny bit of maple syrup). Oh and we made mellow curries with coconut CREAM instead of coconut milk.

@DesertDreams88: we don't have any appointments from 18 months until 4 years unless we want to here. My doctor today said I could come in once a year for measurement checks if I wanted but he wasn't concerned because she got herself back on the 20% curve she started being on at 6 months. She was born at 98% and dropped to 50% and then settled at 20 and dipped below that at 15 months I think because of a stomach flu bout. He was concerned at that appointment but left it until the 18 month one to see what our next course of action would be.

She is always happy and pretty high energy. She also walked early so I feel those are factors for lower weight gain. And some kids just won't eat more which sucks. It doesn't matter what I do, mine will go for a day or days eating barely anything, like a few blueberries or some peas even though she is offered veggies, cheese, yoghurt, fruit, pasta etc-stuff that other toddlers would scarf down.

@DesertDreams88: are you breastfeeding or formula feeding? That should dictate which growth charts your doctor uses because typically breastfed babies are smaller.

My girl is super tiny yet nobody (but me haha!) is concerned. She was 15.5 lbs at 1 year, 18 lbs at 18 months. I add butter to her veggies, give her peanut butter on toast, she loves eggs and cottage cheese.

Unfortunately she hates 10-11% yoghurt and avocado or I would give her those too.

Your toddlers really gained weight from adding fat? Mine sure didn't...it wasn't until I started encouraging more carbs...like rice...that he finally started gaining some. We use butter, whole milk yogurt, coconut oil, avocado, peanut butter all the time, but it doesn't affect LOs weight.

@tlynne: nope, mine hasn't, but I still try to throw it in just in case. She just doesn't eat anything really.

@tlynne: honestly nothing really "helped" my little guys gain weight. I added in calories to help my peace of mind. They are skinny 5-10% kids and probably will be until high school
