DD is 10 months old and had a fever all weekend. It's been hitting the 103s consistently but yesterday at the Dr they didn't find anything they could do. I took her temp at 7, (6 hrs after her last dose of ibuprofen) and it ranged from 103.2 to 104.7 on 2 different thermometers... I have her ibuprofen again but feel so helpless.
What do I do!?! Stagger a dose of Tylenol too? Call the Dr again? He said to bring her in tomorrow if she still had a fever. I'm so worried since it is so high!

I'd definitely stagger Tylenol with Ibuprofen. Do you have a nurse line to call.? 104 is over my comfort threshold with fevers.

I would alternate Motrin and Tylenol just to keep her as comfortable as possible. I've tried the onion in the sock trick in the past too and it really worked to bring fevers down too. Fevers are a good sign that her body is doing it's job fighting off infection, but I know high fevers can be so scary! I hope she feels better soon!!

How's she acting? The fever definitely means her body is working at fighting a bug off. Since you've alreafy been to the doctor I would alternate ibuprofen and acetaminophen. How is she acting? That's more worrisome to me than a number.

@oliviaoblivia: I can call and leave a message for the dr on call until 9pm but he seemed nonchalant about the temp earlier and just said to bring her in tomorrow unless she stopped nursing and got dehydrated.

@Mrs. Deer: she's been okay. The funny thing is she seemed happier around 6 and was smiling and babbling. Now is bedtime so she is really tired and just fell asleep on me but she was reacting when I talked to her.

@creativemomma15: I'm sorry she's not feeling well! We do a cooler bath (luke warm) and it really helps when alternating Tylenol and Motrin also. Good luck.

Poor kid! I'd also alternate doses and call the help line. Is there a temp that if it doesn't come down below, they want you to come in?

Hugs! Fevers can be so tough. I would keep up your routine of Tylenol and Motrin. Definitely try to keep her hydrated. My doctor has been the same about fevers saying that we try to treat the child, not the symptom and a fever means they're trying to fight off infection. Hope she feels better soon!

@blackbird: the Dr wouldn't really say on the phone earlier. He was more concerned about her nursing & staying hydrated. I think their site says 106 is too high but I'll double check that. He just kept saying if she still has it in the morning to come in. Their website describes this dr as having a "relaxed approach" so I get the feeling he thinks I'm crazy for being so worried.

I agree with @Mrs. Deer: high temps are scary, but not so concerning if she's acting normally. When E had a double ear infection over the summer I called the hospital when his temp went over 104, and the nurse told me that as scary as they are for moms, fevers are a good thing, and I only needed to *really* worry if he was acting lethargic. I took him to the ER when it was almost 106 and he wasn't moving at all.
Also, the ER nurse told me that it is perfectly fine to stagger Motrin and Tylenol.
If you're still worried you can call the hospital and talk to a nurse there. It might put your mind at ease to talk to another professional.

I would do tylenol and Motrin all night and keep monitoring temp. If it keeps rising I would call at 105. But really you should trust your instinct. You know baby best!! Don't feel crazy for calling. Always always always better to be safe than sorry - especially when they can't vocalize their feelings yet!

@creativemomma15: you just put sliced onions on the bottom of her feet and cover with socks and/or you can put a bowl of onions in the room! I don't know why it works but it does. Someone on HB told me about it and I googled it too!

if you feel uncomfortable I would call again. However, if LO is eating and sleeping maybe just call in the morning.

Yup, stagger the Ibu and Tylenol. D had HFM and his fevers were consistently over 103. The ped said to give alternate ibu and acetaminophen every 3 hours. Cool compress on his forehead and back of his neck helped, too. I know those high fevers are scary, mama!!

I just dealt with this! Dd is 4 and has had a fever since Wednesday, last night it tipped the scales at 105 (I almost threw up!). The ped said to take her to the ER, that it couldn't wait. So I did. Three hours later, with one child before us, we finally were seen. It was a horrible experience. The Pediatric ER doc said it isn't the number, it is the way they are acting. DD was fine when the meds were working, so he wasn't worried. She was tested for an UTI and does have one, so that's what was wrong with her.
I would alternate meds, if that's what the doc said, we were alternating every 2-3 hours, because she acted terrible if it got higher than 103 (which it did a lot).

Update: So, I took all of your advice and alternated tylenol & motrin for her… It really helped bring the fever down and it seems her fever broke overnight too. She is finally fever free (for now)! What's funny is last night was her worst night of sleep through this all even though the fever seemed to be gone as of like 2 am. Here's to hopefully a healthy baby again.
Thanks so much for your advice and helping me relax…. High fevers just freak me out!
