Just wondering if anyone changes their LOs into clothes that are "for home" (OK to get dirty, older, etc) when you get home from daycare or are at home on weekends/evenings/during the day, and change into "outside" clothes when going to daycare or out of the house. My mom brought this idea up recently for my 2 year old, who's been getting very messy lately (yay independence). We always did this kind of changing as kids, and still do as adults, but with LO we always just treated all her clothes the same. Just wondering what others do.

No, my kids dress casually at home and school. I save nicer stuff for events.

I put outfits I don't like as much on when we aren't going anywhere really that day, mostly so my favorite outfits are clean for when we have plans to see more people. But she gets dirtier outside than at home so that idea wouldn't really help us.
C isn't in daycare but I thought most kids got pretty messy / dirty at daycare?

When I was little we had "play" clothes. But school clothes weren't really different from them.
It's sad that before I even have a baby on the outside I plan to do this. MIL has rather different taste from us, so I'm assuming we'll be receiving a lot of clothes that we wouldn't mind getting messy.

Not yet, but mainly because she doesn't get very dirty at daycare/preschool because they always cover her up in "outside clothes". It's cold where we live, so they do an extra layer for the playground and daycare isn't open during summer.
I was raised with "at home" clothes. Even now, I change into my comfy at home clothes as soon as I enter the door. I think of it as a way of keeping outside dirt separate from inside (I know this doesn't make any sense)
In my culture, the word for it is "pang-bahay" (short for pang bahay na damit) or "house clothes".

I was raised with "at home" clothes, but right now all of her clothes are soft and comfy so I don't mind them getting messy. As she grows older, I want to separate it into home, school, and church clothes.

I put her in the same clothes for play, school and home. I do save one or two nice things for nice occasions but we don't have a lot of those so I just let her get dirty in nice stuff. My husband is a master stain remover.

@avivoca: same. My son lives in comfy stuff that gets dirty.
It's easily washed but also usually fairly inexpensive!

T -shirts are all the same but we emphasize that when Son #1 goes to school or outside, he needs to wear outside pants/shorts..ie. jeans, cargo pants, corduroys..etc. At home he can wear sweats pants, fleece, soft material stuff, which we call soft pants. Usually if we do an outing, he'll come home and change himself into soft pants but if he's coming home from school, he wears the same clothes until bath time, then into the laundry they go.

Nope - DD wears the same clothes whether we are out or at home. So do DH and I for the most part so I don't really see this changing.

I do this; some frumpier hand me downs and stuff I don't like as much, I let her wear at home!

Her daycare clothes anymore are her "play" clothes which are cheaper/older. Otherwise all the good stuff gets ruined before we go out and about. If we are leaving/out on weekends or at events that's when I pull out the nicer stuff. lesson learned and I don't buy as much of this anymore so it doesn't go wasted.

I dress her up more if we are going out. If not sometimes she stays in her pjs all day. I will dress up when I leave the house but at home I like in leggings, nursing tanks and hoodies.

I used to, but lately I feel like that is way too much work - easier to just remove the stains when they do happen.

I grew up having "house clothes" and I think it works. When my son wants to dig in mud and splash in puddles, I'm much more relaxed about it if he's wearing his house clothes. I have house clothes too. My husband and stepdaughter don't (they find the idea funny!). I'm not from the US so I can be weird.

Nope. Almost everything she owns has stains on it. She's 1. Her clothes are cheap. I don't want to ever discourage her from getting messy or having fun because I don't want her to ruin her $3 shirt I got at the resale shop.

@Mae: this. But we do have a few outfits that I save for nicer outings just because I think they won't be as comfortable for her.
I just realized my work around for house clothes is that I don't bother putting pants on her until we go out.

I don't have "house clothes", but my husband does. He changes the second he comes in the door every day and I'm the extreme opposite. I've been known to just sleep in the same clothes I wore all day, which are not "house clothes", haha.
Anyway, so when I dress LO, she wears her regular clothes. When DH dresses her for at home, he always digs up some kind of ugly casual outfit made of like, sports t shirts and last year's too small shorts.

DH grew up with house clothes, yard clothes, and clothes for outings/school...largely bc his family is in medicine and needs to put on clean clothes as soon as they get home anyway, so they put on something comfy. They also wear older clothes for being in the yard. I follow similar patterns with my own kids, but do wear cute/nicer things at home when we aren't planning messy play, because home is where I end up taking lots of pictures.
When my girls go to day care or to Grandma's I send them in cute but cheap clothes I'm not worried about. I don't expect anyone else to recognize a boutique brand dress/worry about ruining it. At home if they're wearing something nice but want to paint/do messy art, I either put on a smock or strip them down (hey, it's hot here!). Saves a lot of stress and lets my kids have fun.

She wears her "play clothes" to daycare! At home she still dresses casually, but I might put her in a tea or Hanna dress. I let her do whatever in them, but I can take it off and stain treat it if things get messy. Plus, then I get to enjoy her cutest stuff

I guess my LO is the oddball. She wears play clothes pretty much whenever we go out. At home she rocks the lacy, glittery, long, ball gown princess dresses. It's like prom all the time at home.

DS is 11 months, so right now its about wearing all the clothes he was gifted before he outgrows them in 10 seconds, so we just let him wear anything soft and comfy at home (i.e no color shirts, jeans, etc.) and basically change his clothes 2-3 times a day whenever something gets dropped on it, plus fresh PJs every night. Once he's a little older we will definitely do home clothes - I was raised that way and still change into beater clothes or PJs as soon as I get home!

Yep, I dress DD in 'home' clothes for playing and grandma's - fleece pants, hoodies & t-shirts just generally comfy clothes. Don't care if they get dirty - I buy mid range so they last thru washing. If we go visiting friends, or shopping or a cafe I dress her nicer - skinny jeans and knit tops, nicer jacket.

My husband and I both change out of our work clothes into house clothes during the week, I don't want to be sitting around in a dress and a blazer! I am sure it would be different if I was wearing casual clothes.
My son, on the other hand, doesn't ever get super dressed up, so whatever he would wear out of the house is game for staying home. I do change him if he's dirty, but usually, he's in one outfit per day now.

I was not raised with house clothes, although now as an adult I will deffo go for a more slobby outfit if I know I'm not leaving the house! Also change into my pjs as soon as I've put LO to bed. LO wears the same sort of clothes all the time, it's all pretty comfy and nothing particularly smart. He does have a few bits that I save for very messy play that are already covered in paint stains etc!

@Silva: this is what I do too! My younger LO wrecks her clothes at daycare, especially since they aren't allowed to use bibs and she is a very avid yet messy self-feeder. On the weekends they wear their cute clothes. If we go outside to play, I change them to play/daycare clothes.

I found out a family member makes everyone change as soon as they're home so they don't get outside dirt and germs on furniture and stuff as soon as they get home. DH and I pretty much change immediately when we get home as well, so I thought it made complete sense. DD is totally into wearing "nightgowns" lately, so she almost always wears them at home. Since she's gotten the concept of nightgowns = at home, she's taken to wanting to change into those as soon as she's home too. If we go to the playground, those clothes immediately go in the hamper when we get home.

Nope-she wears play clothes to daycare and at home. I will change her if we go somewhere nice and I am worried about the outfit (ie a favorite dress or something I made her)
