The gun thread got me thinking, do you have an alarm system in your home for protection? If so, do you use it? Do you use anything else for protection in addition to an alarm or instead of it?

We do have an alarm system but we don't always use it (no baby yet, it may be different if there were a child in the home).
We don't really have anything to use for protection in our home either. No weapons at all except maybe kitchen knives.

We are between alarm systems, I guess you could say. We moved into our house about two months ago and signed up for one, but the agent was TERRIBLE and we cancelled. We haven't gotten around to signing up with a new company yet.
As far as other things: We don't have guns yet, either. We have pepper spray (I have three, total). We have baseball bats. And FI has a flashlight that is used as a night-stick type thing. We used to live in a college town with not-so-great neighbors in our building. Haha.

We don't have an alarm but are looking into them.

We have an alarm system, but it is a local alarm not connected to a central monitoring station. It gives us enough protection to scare off intruders. I thought I would use it more often with a baby, and honestly I don't. I do need to change that though.

We have a very big dog. And my hubby put q million locks on the windows and everything when we moved in.

our rental home has an alarm system built in. our current home that we rent does not.

No alarm system here. I do wish I had a dead bolt though. I live in an apartment and it'd make me feel better.

Yep, with fire and carbon monoxide alarms too. We have guns in case someone gets bold and ignores the alarm.

No alarm system except our two dogs which are very protective. Friendly, but protective. Our house isn't at all big enough right now to warrant an alarm. I don't see us getting one in a future house either. We feel pretty safe with our guns and our dogs.

We don't! We have an alarm sign on our front lawn though. -.-

No alarm but our neighbourhood is super safe...I can't imagine getting an alarm anytime soon.

No alarm. We lock our cars outside for the most part, just in case. We are in the "have a gun" camp though, and we have a dog... who is a chicken

We do have an alarm since the house came with it, however after 5 years we still have no idea how to use it...

It does not but we have two very barky dogs and a few signs outside that say we have a security system. I had a security system in my old house and it went off one too many times so I ended up just pulling it out of the wall in the closet where it was stored. I'm not really a big fan of them.

No, but when we lived out west, the housing we were assigned had one, it just didn't function properly.
I don't know if when we have our own house if we'd go to the expense. I've never lived anywhere where I felt unsafe enough to need one, and I doubt we'd buy a house in an area we felt the need. Besides, we have insurance for our stuff!

Yep, we have a security alarm. We turn it on at night and when we leave the house. It also beeps twice any time a door is opened on the first floor. DH also keeps a gun in a biometric safe in our closet.
And our two furbabies are my barkers against intruders.

I felt like we lived in a super safe neighborhood, and for the most part still do. We bought our house a little over a year ago and all the neighbors are great. Country setting and spread out but super friendly people. Most told us how its a good area, they dont lock there house all the time, or close the gates at the end of their property etc...well then this fall our neighborhood had 4 break ins and some attempted break ins. So things have changed. All during the day when people are at work. So we got an alarm system. For 40 bucks a month its good piece of mind when we are away and for our furbabies at home. I totally feel safe with our dogs (and yes we own a gun too) when we are at home, but you hear of sick things people do to animals when they break in and I worried about my fur babies if there was a break in. Plus I like the fire alarm too. If a fire happens when we are gone the FD will be sent.

We have a highly annoying alarm that I constantly forget how to set and cost us $$ by making it go off all the time.

We don't have children yet, but we do not have an alarm system. We live in a pretty ghetto area of town because you can't find fully renovated three bedroom townhouses for $800 a month in the 'burbs ;).
Our theory is (and has proved to be true) that poor people, which sadly a lot of our neighbours are, tend not to steal from or break into the houses of who they believe to be other poor people as they won't have anything worth taking. It also helps that we have the...ferocious guard pictured as my DP. lol

We have an alarm on the house, but it's not hooked up. We're relying on our dogs to keep the house safe (great dane and ridgeback). So far, it's worked pretty well
