One year we used some printout or something to carve something really fancy into the pumpkin. Usually though, we just draw a face onto the pumpkin with black marker and then cut it out. It's old school, but I love it.

I'm intrigued by the whole pumpkin painting trend, just because our pumpkins usually get pretty gross and that's not fun. But carving pumpkins is so fun with kids! Maybe we'll paint for a few more years, then switch over to carving when they're older.
