We are planning a trip to Seattle in September. When I should plan on purchasing my plane tickets so that I get the best price?
How far in advance do you normally purchase your airline tickets when you are planning a vacation?

I think it really depends. We have bought tickets as far as 6 months in advance and as little as 3 days in advance. The last time we flew from Europe to the US, we bought tickets just three weeks beforehand and got a better deal than when we were looking 4-5 months before.

I read something about there being "sweet spots" for buying airline tickets...i believe the best one is six weeks out. When you buy super far in advance they figure it's something non-negotiable and you'll pay any price.
What i do is watch the matrix on kayak that shows when it is a good time to buy and what the lowest and highest prices have been.

I think we just buy when we decide to go. DH prefers to just pay for things right away when we have the money, even if it's not as good a deal. But I've heard the same thing about 6 weeks out. Actually I heard it's I think the Tuesday 6 weeks before, but that seems too specific to be legit.

For a regular, non-holiday trip, probably 6-8 weeks out. For holiday travel, 8-10 weeks in advance.

Subscribing because I was thinking about asking this question at some point as we are thinking of going to Ecuador to visit my husband's family over the holidays. Tickets are turning out to be MUCH more expensive than I thought, boo So I need to know whatever Jedi tricks there are to get the best deal!!

@Torchwood: tuesday at 2pm is an actual thing. I've saved money that way. It's something about that the airlines offer deals starting on Tuesdays and then they all try to undercut each other.

@hotchildinthecity: I'll make sure to tell DH next time we're flying somewhere then

For me, it's whenever I get around to it. It might be a month before or two months before. We usually have a companion pass to redeem with the airline to make things more affordable.
Oh, I think I remember hearing 49 days before the trip is the best time to book.

When I booked on miles I have done as early as 9 months out. Car rentals have a sweet spot of 3 to 7!weeks but not sure about plane fare.
