We've never used a maid before; she's cleaning our house before we move in, charges $25 a hour. Help!

I think usually it isn't expected. If it's just a one time deal and they do a great job though 10-20% would probably be very appreciated.

I think 20% is great. We use a regular cleaning lady and she doesn't expect tip, we just have a fixed amount we pay her.

@mrsjyw: @Cole: thanks!! I'd like to use her in the future when #2 comes so don't want to disappoint

We didn't tip our cleaning lady, especially if she comes on a regular basis. I'd rather tip at the end of the year during Christmas.

I would not tip especially if she works for herself. I wouldn't want to set up that expectation the very first day!

Our cleaning team comes every 3 weeks, we pay a flat fee. I tip the cost of one service in December.

@mamimami: true, I don't tip the proprietor of a business. My parents' cleaning lady came once a week for years, worked for herself, and they tipped her at Christmas.

I don't tip except if it's super last minute or the holidays. I use a sole proprietor.

We don't. At $25/h (at least in my area), she's chagrin plenty anyway. Assuming she's self employees, I wouldn't tip.

We don't tip either. She works for herself and we just pay a flat fee.

I would tip the amount of whatever extra I needed to pull out of the ATM to pay her. So, for example, if she charged $15, I would pay her $20 because I could only pull a $20 out of the ATM anyways.

Am I the only one shocked at 25/hr?! I mean maybe that's normal but now I feel really really poor.

@Raindrop: I have nooo clue if that's normal or high. We've never used anyone before and she was recommended to me, used nontoxic cleaners, and responded via text quickly. So I was sold, ha! Definitely can't swing it on the regular though.

We have a weekly housekeeper and I don't tip her, just pay the flat fee. However, I do tip around the holidays.

@Raindrop: in my city labour is expensive. I wish I held onto the house cleaner who charged $25/hr because all of the ones after her charged $35/hr plus travel $5...to make things worse they were slow/not very thorough.

@Raindrop: ehh I pay $14 in very rural Illinois so it doesn't surprise me =\
