I usually don't think about it but every now and then I get so sad thinking that he will grow up and leave. I mean I want that for him and luckily I love and adore my husband so we will enjoy each other when our kids grow up but man oh man it all happens so fast.

@irene: I cry too. It's like that book Love You Forever. Ugh! To love someone in a way you've never known before and know they will need to fly away from your nest. My mother said that's why they design teenagers to be so difficult! Haha

I have thought about this and even posted about it!
I moved across the continent away from my parents. My parents moved across an ocean from their parents.
I hope my LO doesn't follow in either of the previous generations footsteps.

@sunny: me too! My dad moved continents, my husband and I both moved continents! I'm terrified that my two LOs will someday also live very very far away.

DH has joked with me that I want to buy a house right next to DD. And it's true. I know my mom is sad we love a couple hours away and the thought of DD doing the same is terrible to me!

Yes, too much. My PPA centered around this. I'm able to be happy about him growing up for the most part, but I still get really sad whenever I stop to think about it
Time has gone so much faster since I had him.

I get sad almost daily - not about him moving away but about how fast he's growing! Every time he his a new milestone, I get sad that he's getting older!

I actually don't worry about this at all. I really want to raise adults who are contributing members of society. I truly believe you get the first 18 years and after that it's up to them! I'd be more upset to raise kids that never really "grow up". My uncle is 54 and moved back in with my grandma two years ago. That's my worst nightmare!

My mom is like this. She is always nostalgic about my childhood. But I was a pretty late social bloomer and am a thousand times happier now as an adult. I had a perfectly nice childhood but it was definitely not the best part of my life. My mom's myopia about this puts a lot of distance between us because she ignores a fundamental aspect of my personality.
So, I am determined not to do this to my son. I want to enjoy watching him grow up and facilitate his (age-appropriate) independence.
It probably helps that I have lukewarm feelings about the newborn stage. He's very cute but it's very exhausting and he doesn't do much yet.

@Beyond2: ditto. When I think about LO as an adult, I think about her going off to college, building her own career - exciting stuff. Although I love these toddler days and I'll miss her little snuggles and kisses, I can't wait to find out what her passions are. Will they be anything like mine, or completely different? What will she find fulfilling? I think it's exciting to think about!

Quite a bit, lol. I don't have à great relationship with my parents now so I often think about when LO is older and how I hope I can be there for her whenever she needs me and that I don't disappoint her.

In fact, this past week my BIL proposed to his girlfriend and I found myself praying for my son's future spouse and hoping she (or he) would be a wonderful person whom we had an awesome relationship with. I get really excited about the thought of him having lots of adventures in his life.

Well I also imagine him as an adult and get excited about all of that. I always have. But I also feel sad that we may not always be able to be so steeped in each others lives. I understand it and I in no way smother my son but I will miss having him around the house and it does seem some days to be happening so fast. I think it's pretty normal to feel both.

@MrsMccarthy: I agree with you. My son is so so attached and sometimes I get frustrated and tired but I try to remind myself that someday he will grow up and not need me so much or want me around, so in a way, it's a reminder to cherish even the most difficult days because they go by so quickly.

Oh totally, and its so so bittersweet. It's so ironic that we love them and care for them and keep them safe and raise them so they can leave us! Welp! I want the world for him, but the world is so big. Sigh.

@sunny: @lamariniere: I hope my son will stay close by, but wanderlust is in our blood. If it's any comfort, my mother says the world feels a lot smaller now than it did when she left her home country in 1973, so I hope it will continue to feel smaller when my son goes on his way.

Wow....I really haven't thought that scenario through. I keep thinking about other morbid things though like who will take care of DD if something happens to us before she turns 18 or 21? I would love to see her off into adulthood, that's a dream come true. I want to make sure she can take care of herself and be a productive member of society. I want to be by her side until then. I need to think positive thoughts! I do think time is just flying on by though. I wish we could freeze time every once in a while.

I haven't really thought about it, but to me it's kind of exciting to think about the men they will become. My main goal is to build an excellent relationship with them so that even if they do move away that we can still stay close.

@looch: haha I intend to follow my kids. Especially when they decide where to settle and have kids of their own. I haven't figured out what I'll do if I have 2 kids in different places though..,,
And yes in general I've thought about it now and then it makes me sad. But I'm also curious what kind of person LO will be as an adult and how our relationship will be when he is no longer so dependent on me!

I think about it a lot. It will be especially hard because both my babies will leave so close together. They are only 21 months apart.

@Mrs. Jacks: that doesn't mean they will leave at the same time! One can leave at 20 and the other 30 years old! Lol
Eta. Unless you have a rule about when they have to be out... I don't think I will, especially if they are pursuing higher education.

@californiadreams: no rule about up and out, but I'm guessing they will both choose to attend college after high school graduation, so really unlikely they'll stay home

I stayed at home all through my undergrad and masters degrees because I went to a university in my home town so i guess i see university as a reason why they might stay at home longer than if they don't go to university! I could have stayed home all though my PhD until my internship (which I went away for), but i just decided i wanted to move out then as i was already 26 years old

@looch: I hope so too! Part of my master plan for retirement is to live in a big exciting city with an international airport, so that no matter where they end up, it will be easy to come visit.

I think about this ... probably too much. DS just started becoming cuddly and snuggly and I love it. I moved many states away from my parents. I love and miss them, especially my mom, so it's hard. I want DS to explore the world and pursue his passions, but I have to admit my heart would break a little if he ended up far away. But, like @greentea, we, too, live right near a world class university!
I am totally obsessed with lo and she can live with me forever if she wants to!
