When I had dental insurance I went every 6 months.
Once I dropped my insurance I went 4 years without going (whoops).
Growing up we only went once a year.

I have always gone every 6 months - even w/o insurance. For a cleaning w/o insurance it was only $65.

Definitely twice a year for cleanings - pretty consistently over the years. I might have missed one or two in law school when I didn't have insurance? I love getting my teeth cleaned. I don't usually have any reason to go more, but I'm doing Invisilign now so I'm there often.

I used to always go every 6 months. My insurance from my grad school sucks for dental though--they only pay for cleanings 1x/year, and only if you go to one place, where it's basically dental students practicing on you and is terrible. Like, they "find" cavities that "have" to be filled, but then when you go in they're like "oh do you know which tooth it's on?" ummm no that's your job?? And then the fillings are uneven. And insurance doesn't cover them. I haven't gone since I was pregnant, oops....I need to find a better dentist and just pay out of pocket!

I actually work for a dental insurance company, and so have pretty good dental insurance, and still rarely go...

Growing up, I went every six month. Once I graduated college and got a job, it took me a couple years to get back into the habit, and then my teeth were in poor shape. Now I go every 3 months, alternating between the dentist and a periodontist.

@Caly: Me too! Hate going!
@nana87: Being pregnant was my excuse for 1 of those 4 years.

I went rarely in my older childhood years, but now I go religiously every 6 months. LO goes with me and we are seen back to back. It is very convenient!

@josina: Ugh! It. Is. The. Worst. I hate it so much I'd much prefer the gynecologist than the dentist. Glad I'm not the only one!

As much as I absolutely hate the dentist, I still go every 6 months.
@Mamaof2: Wow, that's crazy. When my insurance covered only 80%, I was still paying about $60-75 each visit for a cleaning. But maybe I should have asked them not to do some things (like the $50 to scrape at my teeth with that sharp pokey thing)
I'm not covered 100% though so I never have to pay anymore.

I go twice a year. This is what my dentist said: Being pregnant actually means you should absolutely go at least once and get a cleaning. Pregnancy is hard on your teeth. Skip the X-rays obviously.
I hate going to the dentist too but a good hygienist makes it so much more tolerable!

@Mamaof2: @Shizaz: My cleaning is $74 w/o insurance.
The xrays + exam is $195.
Each filling is around $150-175.
@Finfan: I've hard pregnancy is hard on our teeth, so it wasn't a good excuse at all, lol.

Ughh, I hate, hate, hate the dentist. When I was younger we went every 6 months plus had braces so that was added in too. I think that I grew to have a huge aversion to dentist during that time. I continued to go throughout college but after graduation and getting out on my own I started only going 1 every year or every other year. Then I took a LONG break, terrible I know but I just can't stomach it. DH is really good about going every six months and gets on me. Last time I went was Dec 2014 so I am def due again. Prior to Dec 2014 it had probably been 3-4 years, no cavities though!
And we do have dental insurance.

Every 6 months. I don't mind the dentist at all but out of laziness/forgetfulness I went nine (!) years without seeing a dentist in my 20s. Felt kind of immortal when I had no cavities after that.

@Finfan: Yes, exactly! Most dental insurance will pay for an extra cleaning during pregnancy!
