I let my son pick the subject matter. I personally don't know anything about superheroes, but my son is majorly into them, so we found a set of books about Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. I figure that if you like the content, you're more likely to read than if it's a genre you don't like.

My DD always enjoyed books but this year when reading became part of the homework, it became more of a chore. But I finally realized that she really enjoys non-fiction books about nature, so we get lots of those, and she got into a series about fairies that has over 100 books in it, so she's always reading those now. So finding a genre or topic that is interesting always helps.

My DS is only interested in books about Thomas and vehicles.

I think it comes naturally, but can also be taught
DD is 5 months old and we read to her daily and have since birth even if it is just looking at the pictures

I also agree on letting them pick the books even if it is the same book over and over again

Lots of reading with him and he also sees me reading too. I hope it helps make it stick.

I love to read so we have books all over the house. I think just having books around and easy to grab makes a huge difference. We keep a large number of LO's books in our living room so she's always going over there and picking one out for us to read to her. I also offer to read to her at least once a day. So far it's working! LO's a huge book worm and there are some books she likes so much that she'll have me read them first and then bring them over to DH so he can read them to her again!
