I know some level of cross or wall-eyed-ness is normal in the early months. No binocular vision early on, so one eye might wander off occasionally. But LO's left eye seems to always be a bit out of alignment. Shes 9 weeks (2 adjusted), and as best as I can tell/recall, it's always been that way. They never said anything in the nicu, but since she never had the same nurse for more than a couple of shifts, no one really would have had a chance to realize it was all the time. I'm going to ask at her appointment in a couple weeks, but it's bothering me.

If you are worried, ask her ped! At 4 weeks, my LO still has a bit of lazy eye, but much less than she did 2 weeks ago! Is it getting better, or worse? If it's getting better, it probably isn't a big deal. Hugs!

@Torchwood: I as concerned about this as well and took DS to a pediatric ophthalmologist at 9 months.
The dr did an exam and I brought in the pic below
If you look at the picture below you will notice that the light reflecting in his pupil is in the exact same spot even though one eye is turned in – if he truly had a crossed eye the light in the pupil would be in a different spot on each eye.
So maybe take a pic and see how it looks?
I was told he would grow out of it by age 4 and He did grow out of it but I cant remember at what age.

What @Mamaof2: about the light reflection on the pupil. Our ped was a little worried about C and had us go to a pediatric ophthalmologist for an evaluation. First he had us watch it for a week or two and see if it was only when she was tired or constant- again, how off the light reflecting relative to her pupil, not just how cross eyed she looked. The ophthalmologist said she was totally fine and we haven't had a problem since. I would watch it and take pictures for the ped to show them.

I've watched the reflections in her eyes; that's what made me more concerned. I have very few pictures with her eyes open, since she's asleep so much of the time. But in what I can find they all seem like the left eye is off. This one shows that best. I couldn't say if it's more when she's tired, since she's usually tired if she's not asleep. I have a very sleepy baby still.

Did she not have an opthamologist see her in the NICU? My son was born at 27 weeks and he had one see him every other week and once since he's been discharged since ROP is so common in preemies. I'm not sure if her issues are normal or not, but I think seeing an opthamologist anyway would probably be a good idea and put you at ease.

@Mrs.ThinMint: As far as I know they never checked it. I wasn't with her 100% of the time, but nearly, and no one ever mentioned she had been seen.

@Torchwood: I honestly am not sure. I think a premie should get more time, but I can't say for 100% certainty.
