I feel like I have had a good grasp on this since LO was born but have had a few instances where people have scolded me about not keeping LO warm enough and now I am starting to have mommy doubt. What concerns me is MIL, who cares for LO throughout the week. During the winter I had LO dressed in long sleeve onesie, pants and socks but as things have warmed up into the 60's and 70's outside I have had him in short sleeve onesies, pants and no socks. Some days when it is in the 70's and he seems warm he just plays in a onesie and that is it. We always keep our house on the warm side and LO tends to be on the warmer side (he sweats profusely, even as a newborn, when you swaddle or bundle him up)I always figured I was correct because our house is warm enough for me to be comfortable in sweats, a tank and no socks and I am ALWAYS cold. Lately I come home every day and MIL has him bundled in much warmer clothes than I left him in. I always feel shamed by this like I am not dressing my baby warm enough and am a bad mom because I don't put socks on him. Am I off here you think ? We are never taking him outside like this of course and our house tends to be 72-74 degrees and warmer in the main room during the afternoon sun. What do you guys have LO dressed in during the day?

My MIL did this too, I had to teller to stop. My LO runs very warm, if its in the 60s I do long sleeve top and shorts and socks or pants and short sleeve top and then socks. In the 70s, she is in shorts or bloomers and a tank or tshirt. We keep the AC at 76 but it is cooler in the morning, around 72.

I think our moms/MILs were taught differently about how to dress a baby. My mom always lectures me for not putting shoes on LO (she's 8 months. She wears socks, and doesn't walk). I think you're the best judge of how warm/cold your baby is!

If your baby is sweating, then he's too hot! If his hands and feet are cold, then maybe he needs another layer.
I have read that the baby should usually wear one more layer than you are comfortable in. I have also read to beware of grandparents on this issue because they usually overdress the baby. This is actually a SIDS risk when he's sleeping.

Since getting overheated is a risk factor for SIDS and a baby that gets too cold will likely get fussy, have trouble sleeping, and may have other medical problems, the temperature of your home is important to think about when you bring your new baby home.
In general, most experts recommend that you:
keep your home at a 'comfortable' temperature of between 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Don't over-bundle your baby, but instead consider dressing them with one extra layer than you are wearing yourself and then make sure that your baby doesn't seem overheated
The 68 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit temperature is likely more for the wintertime when you have the heat on, as that would typically be a little cold in the summer when you have the air-conditioner on. A temperature of 70 to 75 would be more sensible in the summer and more environmentally friendly. -
I also follow what @junebugmama: does. My two boys sweat a lot so I just adjust. Our a/c is on most of the time b/c it's warmer here where we live and our house is usually about 75 degrees. My boys wear short sleeve top and pants when we are home. All cotton. Sometimes they wear shorts if it's really hot out b/c our house temperature can change a little then.

I feel like this is a grandparent thing in general (to overdress). I think part of it has to do with THEM being colder so they think baby is too. I do what PP have said, extra layer or by feel if his arms/legs are cold, I put on another layer!

I go by the one extra layer rule, but the extra layer doesn't need to be a wool sweater!

Aah my step mother does this too! Tried to tell me my son always needs a onesie... but he tends to run hot! She totally made me paranoid so now I'm constantly checking to see if he's too cold.

It's 72 in my house today and mines running around in just a diaper
I tend to under dress versus over dress. If her feet or fingers seem cold, it's time for another layer. If she's sweating, it's definitely time to take something off. I generally go with asking if I'm comfy and dressing her similarly, especially since she runs warm. Pants are not worn above 70! She seems fine with it-no fussing etc

This is definitely a grandparent thing. Sounds like you keep your baby dressed comfortably. I know my dd always runs hot, so I underdress her. People make comments all the time but I know she gets hot. I just tend to have it go in one ear and out the other. I know my baby better than anyone else does
