We skipped it.
We had Christmas, Baby, big sister's birthday all within two weeks. All of the guests visiting the baby brought presents and for a long time after my daughter was really disappointed if someone came without a gift - she came to expect that a knock on the door meant a present for her.

We skipped it too, but we did wrap her bitty baby doll in hospital swaddling blankets and a hat and gave her a doll diaper bag for her birthday so she could care for her baby with me, and that was a hit.

Baby brought big sister a Barbie car. She had been talking about it for weeks so it worked out nicely (although it's a toy she hardly ever plays with.)

Baby got his big brother a new teddy bear. Big brother got his little brother a stuffed penguin. Both were Gund brand. DS1 was so excited to come to the hospital with a present and he loved getting one too. Although, I don't think it's a big deal to skip it either.

Books! Haha. We're lame, but LO loved it and still remembers that his baby brother gifted him those books.

We may do something for her doll, or another little fun thing, but nothing too big. Possibly books too.

i've this in the back of my head, but i am thinking something more sentimental than another toy might be the way to go. Like a card that he can put in his room that is from his baby brother. And i will have DS1 work on making something to welcome his brother too.
@yin: oh i like the book idea too since DS1 is in dire need of new books. Maybe i will get a special one about brothers!

Kidkraft firehouse. It kept DS1 entertained for hours while I nursed in the early days. He was then 2.5 years old. Worth it!

How old will big sister be?
DD1 was 28m when baby sister arrived. She got a baby Stella doll and feeding accessories from baby sister.

my mom got her some blocks and we made her a baby carrier. but honestly, it didn't matter and she was more into baby sister!

I continued a tradition my parents had done with me and my sisters.
When DD1 came to meet Dd2 in the hospital, there was a doll waiting for her. The nurses lent us a bassinet and even swaddled it for us so it looked just like her new sister. DD1 was SO excited to bring home her very own baby. She has lots of dolls but this quickly became her favourite and she still talks about going to get "her baby" at the hospital.

I was thinking of getting her a stuffed Tigey, since she's obsessed with Daniel Tiger. But I like @Charm54: idea even more. She already talked about how she's going to help me with the baby all the time.

My son was 21m at the time and got a lego duplo truck. It was great since it kept him busy while he was at the hospital.
