I didn't get one, but LO loves the one on his swing SOO much that I'm thinking of getting one, hopefully it will make him like his bed a little bit more, and be okay with spending more time in his bed.
It is nice to have so that you can have a place to put LO when you need to do something and know they'll be entertained.
I am thinking of getting this one: http://www.amazon.com/Tiny-Love-464-Classic-Mobile/dp/B002BSHTS0

We never had one. We did briefly use a crib aquarium, though.

We never had one and like @Mrs.Yoyo, we had a crib aquarium but briefly. We used it only for the music but we stopped using it when we got a sound machine.

We have one - it's pastel and has birds and butterflies - and LJ is terrified of it. Like, freaks out and screams if we turn it on.
We borrowed one from my nana, and LJ fell in love. She was mesmerized by the vibrant colors and patterns. I believe it's made by Mamas n Papas.

we have a projection mobile by fisherprice, i dont think is "necessary" but its nice to have it. right now my Lo is too young to appreciate the projected images so we just play the music for now, but I know as she gets older she will enjoy it

I don't think that is is necessary but we did like ours for diaper changes (our changing table is attached to our crib) but we took it down once she was standing in her crib & we lowered the mattress.

Definitely not a necessity. Didn't use one with Charlie though we had one. But we do use it for olive a lot when we need to set her down some place safe for a while.... Which happens a lot more often with two kids.
Olive does really love hers from tiny love. It's huge but she enjoyed it as a newborn and still does. I bought mine used so I got my money's worth, but it really is just a nice to have.

We received a crib mobile as a gift but never set it up. My LO loves the mobile on her cradle swing!

We had one and DS wasn't too thrilled with it as a newborn. We used a fisherprice projection mobile that I got from my shower when he turned 4 months, it helped him to fall asleep and we used it until he was 7 months. I wouldn't say they are necessary though...

Definitely not a necessity. Plus you could easily DIY one with felt, or look in Pinterest, there are tons of ideas for DIY mobiles.
My son really started to like his around 6 weeks, and will just lay in his crib and stare at it. Ours was a gift from my MIL, and while I love it, definitely not worth $50. I don't think the aquarium entertainer is worth the price new either, but nice as a gift or second hand.

My LO is 2 and we still put it on!! She just likes the music and it is really calming so we put it on as background noise when I read stories to her at night. I know people take it down once kids reach a certain age but she has never yanked on it so we have kept it.

We got one as a gift, the FP projection mobile and we used it for about 6 months. Then he started yanking the animals, so those came down. Then he started sitting up and when we lowered the mattress I just took the whole thing down.
We just sold it, too. It was great while we had it, but I wouldn't have purchased it.

We didn't have one. I was worried that she'd think crib time is play time and try to get at the mobile and not fall asleep.

I made one...hand sewed tiny tiny stuffed animals and everything and guess what?! We NEVER hung it up! DS never slept in his crib well early on and you can't even put him in there now, so there was no point, for us.
EDIT: He does love looking at one at the doctors office when they weigh him, so your LO may enjoy a mobile, but I don't think they are a "must have".

LO isn't here yet, but we don't have one. we were going to get one, however, my brother told us how the one they had for my nephew ruined their crib(scuffed it and wore off the paint). we didn't want to ruin the crib. and the funny thing is, the reason why we went with a(very loose) 'animal/jungle' theme for the nursery is because DH found a mobile he absolutely wanted, and we never even got it. we'll see how it goes without one. but we did get a sound and lights machine and that projects on the ceiling so it's something.

We never used one either. I have one brand new in a box that was gifted to us so maybe we'll use it for baby #2. So I'd say it's not a necessity since we were fine without using it for our son.
