I have been using empty baby food jars to thaw cubes of homemade baby food and to send to daycare. I just read something about the plastic lids of canned foods being unsafe. I'm washing the jars and lids on the top rack on the dishwasher and using them over and over. If it's not safe can you recommend a similar sized glass alternative. Arguably the food is not touching the plastic. Thanks!

@youboots: I have no idea about the safety (seems fine to me!) but I used small mason jars for the same purpose. I think they were the 4-oz size; found them at Target!

I'll second the 4 oz mason jars, and bought the BPA free reusable plastic lids. I use those for my own lunches! They keep me to a 3 oreo ration, haha.

I would be comfy with that exposure. But wean green and green sprouts both make reusable glass baby food jars that I've heard good things about. Actually, there are a whole bunch if you search 'glass baby food jar' on Amazon.

I think it's perfectly fine as long as the food isn't touching the lids directly. I did that with both of my kids and it didn't seem problematic.

We used the Wean Green containers and I love them. They're still useful for small amounts of leftovers (happens more often than I ever realized!) or portioning out some of our food for DD, even though we're way past the purée stage.

We have Wean Green containers and really like them, but I don't see any problems with reusing glass baby food containers either. I personally don't run any plastic through the dishwasher because it can break down, but unless the food is in direct contact, I doubt it is a problem.

@coopsmama: I agree, but then how do you know that it doesn't end up touching it at daycare? Having worked in a daycare briefly..I don't think it's something most teachers would really think about. (Maybe if you brought it up though.)
