I'm looking at getting the Mirena or Sklya IUD, vs. Nexplanon, the implant in your arm. Both would be covered at $0 under my insurance, but probably have to pay for the appointment(s). I have an appointment next Thursday to discuss the options, but I'm wondering if any of you narrowed it down to these options and how you made your decision?

I got the mirena and did not like it. I had done birth control in the past and decided to try an IUD cause my doctor recommended it. I bleed for over 7 months non stop. I also was depressed and gained weight and my sex drive was zero pretty much. It ended up "migrating" and I had to have it removed. Fortunately they got me in quick but i have heard of women who had to wait a month to get it out. I personally don't like insert both control cause i personally can't control it. I have to wait for a doctor to remove it. If I'm on the pill then I can chose to stop anytime. Thats just my personal opinion I know people they have worked for but I know a lot of people who had bad experiences with both.

I don't have experience with Nexplanon, but I very much preferred my Skyla to Mirena. I had Mirena after baby #1 and Skyla after baby #2. Insertion was less painful, side effects more minor, adjustment period much shorter. But it only lasts 3 years vs. 5. My three years is almost up and I'm likely going to give Kyleena a try since DH is still very nervous about getting a vasectomy

@DesertDreams88: I have mirena. I dont remember looking at the other two options you mentioned but I am happy with it. I did have bleeding for about 4-6 weeks after placement which was annoying. Just when I started to think it was too much, it subsided. And after that initial adjustment I stopped getting a period at all. It has been great! I know not everyone totally stops periods but they do get lighter.

I had Nexplanon in for over a year after I had my son, and liked it. I did have occasional 1 1/2-2 week stretches of medium to light bleeding, but I didn't have monthly periods either. I had one episode of heavy sustained bleeding for 15 days, but my doctor gave me a 7 day estrogen? (I think) cycle to reset everything and it worked great.
I chose the Nexplanon over an IUD because I had read way too many "my IUD migrated" stories, even though I know that is the exception to the rule and not the rule it freaked me out. Because of that I liked the ability to poke my nexplanon and know that it was where it was supposed to be.

I loved my mirena and have had 3. I also insert IUDs and nexplanons on a regular basis and I would say people are usually very happy with whichever one they choose but IUDs seem to be the winner. Also I think most OBs use an IUD as birth control fwiw. Much less systemic side effects than the pill and reliable!

I have mirena and am happy with it. I did have spotting afterwards for what felt like a really really long time. And I had some PPD going on when I got it inserted which I sort of blamed on the iud but was probably not related, to be fair. I’ve had it almost 3 years and am really happy with it. I don’t get a period, just maybe once a month or so I’ll get a day or two of spotting.
I was too nervous to get one between kids because of the horror stories, but once we were done I signed right up. (Especially since I got pregnant with our second a few months earlier than the plan).
I never looked into an implant really, but what @MenagerieMama: said about less systemic effects of what I was thinking but unable to articulate.

No experience with Nexplanon but I’m on my 3rd Mirena. After a few months my period disappears completely which I love. I did have some spotting after insertion the second time, but this recent one the spotting didn’t last too long. It worked well for us before so I just stuck with it.

@kiddosc: Just wanted to share that my husband was really worried about the pain, but he got it done the day before yesterday and is doing really well, just sore. I think the big difference is that he got general vs local anesthesia and the spinal block is supposed to provide pain relief for 3 days.
