My 16 month old has recently discovered she can kick lying down and usually spends her nappy change kicking my chest. It's getting quite frustrating. Any tips on how to make her stop?

Could you try to act like you're really hurt and pretend to cry? I would talk to your LO and explain how, although it's fun, it's not nice to kick people, and that they need to stay still for just a few min and then they can get up and jump around (or whatever... Just to get them distracted enough for you to finish the change)

Oh man. Wish I could say it gets better. But at 22 months, diaper changes are generally awful! What has helped is giving him a special toy to hold, or sometimes singing to him. Also, have you tried changing her standing up?

@BabyBoecksMom: I do talk to her and tell her not to but she doesn't quite understand yet when she hurts me. She's not doing in anger, she thinks it's a fun game.
@hilsy85: She was better tonight when she had something to hold. I have tried from the side and she just twisted her body to get me. Standing up might be the next thing we try.

@AprilFool: ahh yes, my son has figured a way to wrap his leg around me somehow so I'm locked and stuck while trying to change. Or he clenches his knees together.
We also find that giving a book or something he doesn't usually get to hold helps. The book is especially helpful if he's given a task, like, find the ball in this book... Keeps them totally occupied!

@hellobeeboston: Glad to know mine is not the only one who is made of rubber! A book is a brilliant idea. She is obsessed at the moment.

I take it you don't use a changing pad? Like, one of the contoured ones that sits on top of a dresser or something? Those make it pretty much impossible for LO to kick you during changes because of the angle.
