I"m having LO's first birthday party tomorrow at a house that has a pool. This is NOT a pool party. Its summer and people have asked today if they should/can bring bathing suits. I didn't want a pool party because I personally don't want to take my LO in the pool. And I know a couple of my friend's don't want to take their LO's into the pool. I also know some older kids that can go in the pool on their own, but then the other kids who can't will want to go in. I didn't want a swim party. Is it wrong to have a party at a house with a pool, but not open it up to swimming?

DH and I were just discussing this re DS' first birthday. We have a pool and I don't want his birthday to be a pool party. We plan to just make it clear on the invitation that it's not a pool party? Not sure how that'll go down. Following!

i think it would be really hard to navigate an outdoor summer party at a house with a pool without someone wanting to go in! but since it's tomorrow, i'm assuming you have activities and all that ready to go, so do what you have to do!

I would have no issue saying that the pool isn't open during the party. Blame on being uncomfortable with the safety aspect with so many people around.

We went to a party last year that was an indoor and outdoor party at a home with a pool. No one got in. To be fair they had recently moved to the house and I didn't know they had a pool until we got there.
I would just so no. And site safety as your reason.

I agree I have some concerns about hosting a pool party with young kids without safety measures in place. I would just start spreading the word that you are not planning to have the pool open during the party but have lots of other fun things planned!

As I a guest I would rather you not have the pool open! I would make sure to tell guests that ask that the pool isn't open and maybe put up signs saying No Swimming for anyone who isn't sure.
Not the same thing but we have a treehouse in our backyard that was here when we moved in a year ago. We still haven't cleaned t out and the railings aren't quite low enough for little kids, so I put up a sign that said Keep Off Please for LOs bday party. Some of the parents asked why but everyone made sure there kids didn't climb up.

Oooh, sticky situation. Well, you are complately reasonable and you must decide what has to be done. I can imagine why the party just sounds cooler because of your pool, but if there are kids who can't go, then it is going to be a cranky party. Can you move the location for your party? I mean, the older kids will also cry if you don't let them go. It is difficult for children to understand this you see. So getting out of this is likely going to take some compromise. This is the thing about owning too many things. It brings too many problems with it.

I would definitely prefer no pool as a guest! I went to a 2yo bday pool party once and it was a huge disaster and I'll never accept another pool party invite again. Their child happened to be a perfect angel who was potty trained and could already swim?? But for everyone else it meant staying in the pool the entire party and cleaning up poopy messy swim diapers. Anyway I would just reply "no swimming" whenever someone asks and have signs/barricades the day of. As long as no one is swimming I don't see why anyone would feel put out!

Will you be outside at all or indoors?
I'm reminded of my nephew's first bday party at a community room. It had 3 doors to an outdoor area with a pool and sil kept all the doors open (so there was physical access to the pool). A kid fell in and mom (who is a nurse and had to go to work right after) jumped in and rescued him. She was completely soaked and her husband had to bring extra clothes for her. Thankfully the little boy was fine.
We were talking after how that was probably not the best setup.. there was no talk of swimming at all (sil didn't mention it in invites). The doors were opened by the hosts (sil/bil).. ungated pool...

I personally would be a tad annoyed if the party was outdoors but no swimming allowed in a non-gated pool. You have to be crazy vigilant anyway with whiny kids who want to swim but are told they can't. Haha.

@Modern Daisy: This is exactly what I was thinking would happen.
The party turned out fine! No issues at all with the pool. It was actually super hot out. But one thing that probably helped is that the pool is down on a second level of the back yard. It was so hot that most everyone hung out inside the house or on the first shaded level that is right out of the back of the house. There is a third level that I know a lot of kids were going down to, so they would have had to pass the pool. But just no issue at all. Kids were either 5 years old or like 1 years old. I'm so happy it worked out. Thanks for all your thoughts!
