My DH's 40th birthday is in May, and he has been obsessed with the idea of having a certain band play for ages. We have an idea of how much that would cost, and are looking into how much a venue would cost to hold the party.
I think we need to provide alcohol/drinks, but it is turning into a crazy expensive party, so DH thinks that we might get away with just providing the entertainment and people can buy their own drinks. That would be tacky, right?

Maybe a compromise would be doing a signature drink and one type of beer or wine? We recently went to a party that was similar where entertainment, heavy appetizers and two types of signature drinks were included and I didn't think twice about paying for other drinks.

It wouldn't be tacky as long as you make it really clear on the invite. Is a champagne toast in the budget?

I think if you provide food and make it clear it's a no host bar on the invite that's fine. Or you could see if his parents or your parents or someone else who would get a big gift for him to foot the bill.

If you provide non alcoholic drinks, then i don't think alcohol being cash pay is tacky. As long as someone can get something to drink if they are thirsty!

Maybe like buy a case of wine and a keg of beer, and anything else is cash bar? And if you kick the keg and case, it's cash after?

I've been to venues where some set # of basic drinks (think beer, wine, & soda(like 2/guest)) were included. Could that be a good compromise? I wouldn't bat an eye at that.

I would really only expect free booze at a wedding. I think the beer for free would be so generous!

I wouldn't expect my drinks to be paid for at a birthday party, so I don't think it's tacky at all.

I think if you are hosting the party, and it has a bar, you should provide some kind of alcohol. Either in the form of tickets, or just doing beer (plus I would have non-alcoholic options like iced tea & water). And just make whatever you're doing clear on the invite.

I think if you were just all meeting up at a bar or something, it would be totally fine to expect everyone to pay for their own drinks, but if it's a private event with a formal invitation, etc, I wouldn't have a cash bar. I'm not comfortable with my guests ever having to open their wallets at a party I invited them to to celebrate myself/my spouse/my kids.

I'd never go to a birthday party expecting it to be free drinks, even if it was at a venue and all that. So no, not tacky at all. Maybe provide something non alcoholic but that's it at most!
