Labor Day OCPT Support Thread!

Two full-on pees outside the potty. I need to implement consequences. He can do it, he's just playing me.

I know he's a spirited (read: stubborn) kiddo and I'm terrible disciplinarian, but it's absolutely behavior so I've gotta come up with something.

This thread makes me scared! We've decided we're going to do it over Columbus Day weekend. I'm soooo not looking forward to it. I need to get some supplies and talk to daycare about their policies.

I've been casually following this thread as we are sloooowly moving into potty training, but Inwanted to share that H pooped on the potty today! It's the only thing she's done besides fart.

@Adira: I really like OCPT, I'd recommend it! It is scary but you'll get through it! We've had a really rough morning today, but my LO is super stubborn and I knew that stubbornness would likely rear its ugly head I think X will do well!

    @avivoca: that's awesome!!

@NovBaby1112: all night is so impressive! I can't even do that.
@Applesandbananas: sorry. Wish I had an idea for you to try. Sometimes you have to be the bad parent. Or make your DH take over and discipline.
@Adira: it is exhausting but I love not having to change diapers. I took the changing pad off her dresser and it looks so naked now.
    @avivoca: awesome!

I packed her bag for tomorrow. Packed like 5 pairs of leggings. Everyone else with a LO in day care don't forget an extra pair of shoes in case the pee goes down their leg into the shoe. No one wants to leave work to go home and get a new pair of shoes.

Wow, so much progress made this weekend!

@Smurfette: Great tip about the shoes! I was so happy we trained during "crocs" season so I could just rinse his shoes off. He did ruin one pair of adidas sneakers as I couldn't get the smell out, even with washing, but they were old anyway. The shoes definitely get covered in pee in the beginning!

@Adira: Haha no need to be scared! It's a pretty exhausting and messy part of parenting, but only lasts a few weeks. Just take it one day at a time. And, knowing how agreeable and easygoing Xander is, I bet he'll get it right away!

@Smurfette: ha, me neither! I'm super nervous for tomorrow! Not only is it her first day of preschool, but it will be her first day all day outside the house in undies! I've packed a few changes of clothes too, luckily LO lives in he crocs so those are easy to clean up!
@Applesandbananas: how's the rest of your day going?

M has done great today with peeing on potty. She hasn't popped yet though and I hope she isn't holding it. We took a short trip to park, no accidents, and now she's napping.

@QueensBee: yes! I told DH to send her in her water shoes but sending another plastic sandal pair too.

  9. Applesandbananas

    pomegranate / 3845 posts

@NovBaby1112: not so good. LO just really resents being told to go potty. We laid down the law: if you pee in your shorts or on the floor, Elmo goes bye-bye. He's not reliable about telling us to go but if we remind him, he fights us. He's responds to rewards (DH has had a lot of success with rewards/bribes) but I know the book cautions against rewards. It's tempting to bribe him/reward him and I feel like I've been toeing that line too, with things like "You want to watch Elmo? Let's go pee and then we will watch Elmo." And then I remind him on the potty that we will go watch Elmo if he pees.

She just had an accident, on the couch of course, but she did stop herself and finished on the potty. So she knew at least that.

  11. Applesandbananas

    pomegranate / 3845 posts

@Smurfette: that's kinda where we are. He only goes willingly to the potty if he's already started to pee and will finish on the potty although this morning he did have two incidents of peeing and not even attempting to go to the potty.

I posted a separate thread before I saw this one but was anyone else's child super resistant from the start? If we try to put him on the potty (after he start peeing) he becomes hysterical and fights it tooth and nail. He even got hurt last pee. We have to physically force him onto the potty and hold him there which is both physically exhausting and traumatizing for everyone. I'm at such a loss as to what to do.

  13. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Applesandbananas: I guess I shouldn't be disappointed, this is only the 2nd accident in three days. And really the first was on me. I know there are going to be set backs.
@Ra: what potty is it? Could you try a different one? If you are using a small one, try the regular one?

  14. Ra

    honeydew / 7586 posts

@Smurfette: It's a small one. He's generally scared to sit on the big potty (even with the potty seat). I feel like such a failure.

  15. NovBaby1112

    grapefruit / 4066 posts

@Applesandbananas: I've been trying to make it into a game and fun, so like I'll say "oh I really need to pee. What should I do??" And then M will say "go on the potty mommy!" So we race to the potty and she watches me go, and we cheer, and then she will give it a try after that. I've found this approach to work without her feeling like I am "forcing" her or bugging her to go. And I have DH do the same.

  16. Applesandbananas

    pomegranate / 3845 posts

@NovBaby1112: I tried having him come with me but I didn't make it a game, I'll try that! I keep reminding him that he needs to keep his shorts dry and if they get wet, Elmo goes bye-bye. I really thought laying off would help but it didn't. I hope this Elmo threat helps!

  17. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Ra: you are not a failure!! Could you post something on the OCPT FB page? See if anyone else has gone through it?

@Smurfette: I agree!! R is doing so well!

So this afternoon when we came in, he drank a full sippy of water and was obviously needing to go. I told him we were going to go and that was an epic fail. I tried to warn him (we had Sesame Street on, so I said "after Abby, we are going to potty") and he still wouldn't go.

We went back to Elmo and I reminded him that we were keeping his shorts dry and if he got them wet, Elmo was going bye-bye. I asked him if he needed to go pee and he said no. He told me a few minutes later that he needed to pee and we went to the potty. He peed and pooped!

It's been almost an hour since and he's pulling the same antics, it's clear he needs to pee and so I asked him if he needed to go and and he said no. I reminded him we were keeping his shorts dry and if they got wet, Elmo was going bye-bye. We'll see if it works again...

We are ending the three days with 2 poop accidents and 2 pee. She took herself to go poop today. I know tomorrow will be a set back, more distractions, but I feel good going into it.

I cleared the commando thing with his teacher BEFORE we started potty training and she was totally like yeah, we will do whatever you want, we try to follow whatever the parents are doing at home. Today he shows up commando and she's like "I don't think we can do that, I need to talk to the director! Does he have any underwear at all?!" And I was like "well we are using boxer briefs as shorts at home, but they're very loose so if he HAS to have underwear, that's what I'm bringing in, but they're just as loose as those shorts and that extra layer might trip him up..."

So infuriating. I asked and I told her the thought process behind it and NOW that it's his first day at daycare and he has no underwear she decides she ought to ask?! Ugh! I ordered 4t Elmo briefs on Amazon prime so if they really fight me, hopefully the combination of a size too big and Elmo will be enough for LO to be successful. The authors point is muscle memory, underwear is snug like a diaper and that muscle memory has been in place since birth, something snug goes on, pee and poop get released.

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Applesandbananas: same thing here. I am waiting for the director to call me when she gets in.

  25. Applesandbananas

    pomegranate / 3845 posts

    @Smurfette: any word?

I haven't heard anything yet, I really want to call and check on him (he's a morning pooper and that's what I'm sure they're nervous about) but I'm afraid they'll tell me then that he needs underwear.

I told the teacher NOT to put him in a diaper at all today and to call if there were issues. I even brought an extra blanket for her to lay under him if she was nervous about naptime and no diaper, so we shall see.

  26. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Applesandbananas: I called but the director wasn't getting in till 10:30 and was off the last 3 days, so hopefully she doesn't take too long to call me back. I have other issues I need to talk to her about. But I need to stress to her to stress to the teacher, the pull ups are for nap only. If they use them otherwise I am going to take them all away. I know exactly how many they have.

  27. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Applesandbananas: I just talked to the director and she said it is fine as long as she is in leggings and they are thick. They are worried about poop cross-contamination. We can't send her in a skirt or dress (duh).

  28. Applesandbananas

    pomegranate / 3845 posts

@Smurfette: I just talked to daycare. No accidents so far, no poop yet and that's their worry too. They don't want poop to get everywhere. I told the we only had the boxer briefs so I'll take those in tomorrow but they're not any tighter than his shorts. I'm going to pull out some pants with elastic around the ankles foo and see if they'd be okay with those, but it's going to be 90s tomorrow so idk how I really feel about him being in long, thick pants.

  29. Applesandbananas

    pomegranate / 3845 posts

@Smurfette: no accidents as of 4! No poop yet either. I'm going to bring some pants options tomorrow and see if we can get a few extra days commando.

@Applesandbananas: dry except one poop accident. So better then I was expecting. We are trying panties tonight and tomorrow.

    pomegranate / 3845 posts

@Smurfette: we had one pee accident at home, it was my fault. DH and I were in the next room, talking, and I heard LO screaming that he had to go potty, so I went out and helped him to the potty but we were a couple seconds too late. He'd just gone to the potty maybe 15 minutes before so I wasn't rushing in to get him and I probably should've been.

Poor guy was so sad, we'd been telling him we'd take away Elmo if he got his shorts wet and so when we didn't make it, he started sobbing "no, Elmo, mommy, Elmo" and had a full on accident. I felt so horrible. We're not going to mention taking away Elmo anymore, I think we are over the hump with needing a consequence.

We're still using the night diaper and this evening, we put him in the night diaper and he told us he needed to go and actually took off his diaper to go. I was impressed! It gives me hope that undies won't wreak havoc...

  32. Applesandbananas

    pomegranate / 3845 posts

@Smurfette: so far so good at school!! We had an accident on the way in though. We were stuck in gnarly traffic (it was going on an hour since we'd left home and our commute is usually 20 minutes) and he told me he had to poop, I asked him to hold it but we literally couldn't move. He tried to hold it but couldn't but did hold his pee until we stopped at McDonald's and he peed successfully for the first time in a public potty. He had boxer briefs on since daycare flipped out about commando, so it was an easy, quick cleanup. Totally my fault

Since he's doing well with the boxer briefs, I think I'll break out the Elmo undies this weekend! They should arrive Friday!

  34. Smurfette

@Applesandbananas: that isn't your fault, it was traffic. Nothing you can do about that. Glad that he is doing great!

  35. Applesandbananas

    pomegranate / 3845 posts

@Smurfette: true, and it definitely wasn't his fault. I think he's done incredibly well he had a nighttime diaper on last night and took it off to go pee one more time before bed!

  36. Applesandbananas

    pomegranate / 3845 posts

@Adira: I'm so proud of him!!! I think X is going to do really well too!

    pomegranate / 3845 posts

@Smurfette: are you guys using a nap diaper at daycare? Day 1 we didn't and he woke dry but today he peed a ton at nap. I have a feeling they're going to ask about a nap diaper tomorrow. I think I'll take in slip ons so he can take them on and off. That's what we use at home and he took it off last night to pee one last time before bed.

  38. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Applesandbananas: they are putting a pull up on her till she is dry for numerous days in a row. She ran up to me today when I got there, Mama I stayed dry all day! She was so proud of herself. Even during nap and in panties. She didn't poop today.

  39. Applesandbananas

    pomegranate / 3845 posts

    @Smurfette: that's awesome! Go R!!

LO stayed dry all day at daycare but had 2 back to back accidents at home. DH took him potty before they went outside and said he peed a lot but he had an accident outside and then came in, tried to pee on the potty (with DH) and then I put new shorts on him and they went back outside and he peed his shorts again just a few minutes later.

I don't know what happened. I don't know if DH isn't encouraging LO to totally empty (I always wait until LO tells me he's done and if he tries to say he's done super quick, I tell him I need to hear more pee) or if it's from playing outside with the water. In the first couple days when LO was on the potty, I'd run the bath water to get LO to pee, so I think it might've been from hearing the water running. Or he's just regressing. I don't know. He wasn't even showing signs of needing to pee when he just peed

@Applesandbananas: don't be so down. Accidents are going to happen. It hasn't even been a week yet. Don't be so hard on him or you. He is doing great!
