Any suggestions or guides that show ideas for learning how to take better pictures (aka learning how to use lighting, angles, etc) while getting better family pictures with a toddler?
Lots of photography guides/tutorials seem to focus on newborn/infant photography or older kid photography. I feel like I'm having trouble because she can't sit still and can't understand commands. I'm thinking maybe a remote shutter release might help so I can pose her and snap the shot?

We take a lot of videos...my husband then snips out the best images and turns them into still shots.

@looch: Do you use the video on your DSLR or phone? How do you grab shots from video? I have a mac so I guess I should be able to do this.

My husband usually uses his android phone, and then I have no idea how he grabs the images, I will ask when he arrives home. We also have a Mac, but I think it's an add on program, knowing him and his complexities!

Ok, I found out that he uses his HTC phone or our Canon point and shoot with video. He imports to iMovie to get the stills, then he edits them in photoshop, if needed.

k i'm absolutely no help since i need to improve my pics, but what i do is take lots of pics while i have my kids in a certain position. i end up with hundreds of pics but have a handful that come out good hahaha. and since i keep clicking, i also capture some classic funny looking pics.

@looch: Thanks for the tips! I just got the iMovie app on my phone and will have to learn the iMovie on my computer.
Now I have to learn how to get my videos with my DSLR to stay in focus!

@Thehistoryofus: For recording videos on a DSLR you will need to adjust the focus either manually or auto (just hold the shutter down for a bit while the camera auto focuses) while recording. I try to auto focus right before I record, but my LO will always move around. I just have to adjust the focus when he moves closer/further. I'm learning to manually adjust so that it transitions nicer than auto focus while recording.

I take a lot of photos, and it ensures that I get at least a few good ones out of the batch. I like to take pictures of my LO playing because he usually stays in one place and focuses on the activity at hand. It makes for great photos, and it's not posed.

I don't have a toddler, so I'm not sure if this will help or not, but I think I read somewhere that if you put your camera on continuous mode and auto-focus, you'll be able to take pictures quicker without having to wait for it to re-focus for every shot. But that's just what my flaky memory is coming up with at the moment, so I'm not sure if that's true or not.

Just some general photo tips - get down on her level, use TV (shutter priority) mode to set a fast shutter speed, don't use flash if possible (try outside, or near a window). Your pics may be blurry because your shutter speed is too slow, and not because of focus. Sorry if these are too simple!
