We recently bought a house (in Oregon) and the kitchen sink was clogged a few days later. We had a plumber come out to fix it, while he was snaking the drain, he broke through a cast iron pipe and water leaked into our finished basement. It was enough of a leak to require part of the ceiling and the walls to be ripped out. He claims because the pipe was old, he is not responsible for any damage. We think, because there was no contract signed, no warning of risks of breakage, no questions as to what kind of pipes we have, he should be responsible for some of the damage. We're not asking him to foot the whole bill but some help would be appreciated. Any ideas?
