My daughter is starting to like me to read her longer books but she still likes to have a picture to look at on most pages.
I had a Ramona Quimby book lying around and she really liked that story but kept asking to flip to a page where there were pictures.
Anyone have any good recommendations for us?

Some of the Dora books are good. We struggle with the same thing. She wants more of a plot but more of the "books" take too long to read a page with not enough picture for her to look at.

How old is your LO?
I'll check the names when I get home. But we have a bunch of paperbacks I get from scholastic for $1-3! There's pictures on every page and just 2 sentences each.

@locavore_mama: She's 3. We have lots of little golden books and she likes them too but looking for a little longer story than most of those.

We have been reading ole moon by jane yolen over and over for bedtime. It is longer but the pictures are gorgeous and it is really well written so I enjoy reading it. It sounds like you might be looking for more like a chapter book with pictures though? I can't remember what the Ramona books are like...

Rocket writes a story is super cute! I think there's a few books in that series.

Ladybug girl (the whole series is fantastic!!!), fancy Nancy, stone soup, Angelina ballerina, Lily and the purple plastic purse, Madeline. A lot of the Disney movie story books ones have more story to them, and reading the stories first helps the movies to not be as scary since she'll know what to expect.

@Maysprout: I just counted and the first one has 31 pages, though not every page has text. Are you looking for more pages with moderate amount of text, or more text on pages with small pictures? Yesterday, I only read part of the Disney Enchanted book, it's 48 pages, but there's a lot of text, we'll go back & finish it today. Which looks more like what you're interested in? I can send along more suggestions later

Robert McCloskey's series on Sal are graduated. "Blueberries for Sal" is the first one, then "One Morning in Maine" (this one will take a solid 15 minutes or so to read aloud, maybe a little longer), and the final book is "Time of Wonder" which is gorgeous, but clearly written in a more poetic style for older kids (still worth a try with a 3 year-old!). The characters are the same in all three, but the stories take place at different stages of Sal's childhood, so you literally see her grow up. I love McCloskey. "Make Way for Ducklings" is good, too.

My DD is almost 6 and she loves all of the Robert Munsch books. She reads them herself but especially loves us to read them to her. Paper Bag Princess is one example. Some of them are really ridiculous and hilariously illustrated, which is why she loves them.

Robert Munsch, Babar, Curious George, and Madeline series are great picture books with a longer story line.

We enjoy reading short chapter books: Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa, The Tales of Oliver Pig, and the Little Bear series have all been big hits with my 3-year-old.

@mrs. bird: Probably more along the lines of the enchanted books. A picture on each page but a decent amount of text. She likes to hear lots of details. We make up our own stories and they're filled with minutia ~ girl is detail oriented. -
@Maysprout: My daughter is 3.5 - she loves stuff by Mo Willems (the elephant and piggy series, Knuffle Bunny, pigeon books), The Day the Crayons Quit, and Olivia. She also like the Little Golden books.

@Maysprout: I was coming to suggest Robert Munsch as well. I have bought a couple of his collections for my niece (3yo) and nephew (6yo) and they are engaging for both age groups. The illustration is great and the stories have a decent plot.

The busy town books by Richard Scarry have a lot of text and a lot of pictures. They're my favorites!! I nannied some kids and it would take like 30 min. to get through a single book, and there is ton to look at on each page because the illustrations are so detailed. It's also a good series of books to play "I Spy" with.

I just remembered that LO recently found our big winne the pooh treasury. It has chapters and pictures but lots if text. My LO is only 2 1/2 so we had to summarize a lot to keep turning pages but that might be a good option? I can take a picture when I get home if you want?

@Maysprout: what did you end up finding? My son is 4 and is definitely ready for longer, chapter-style books, but still needs a lot of pictures.

@Maysprout: Eric Carle and Todd Parr. The illustrations are great and the story is actually interesting/has a good moral (mostly Todd Parr).
These are two authors that I have been collecting!

@lamariniere: Lauren Child has some books that are retelling of fairy tales that are long but not chapter books.
Another good option might be books with a bunch of short stories. The Stinky Cheese Man comes to mind, it's hilarious and has long chunks of text but an illustration for each story.

I would try the Mercy Watson books by Kate DiCamillio, they are heavily illustrated shorter chapter books.
