I think mine was probably the Nightingale.

Life After Life was the book I enjoyed the most, but I think When Breath Becomes Air was the best book.

Me Before You. I cried a few times while reading it and bawled my eyes out by the end. I even hugged DH while crying after reading it.

@erinbaderin: Excellent choices. I recommend A God in Ruins for you in 2017 I still think about Life after Life often.
When Breath Becomes Air would probably also be my pick for best read in 2016.

@Pancakes: I read it! I liked it, but not as much as Life After Life. The last paragraph....!!!

lol I just came here to comment and the Nightingale was what I was going to say! haha. I just read it and it was so good, read for 3 hours straight one night!

@twodoghouse: I'm reading that now - I love it but it's been hard to make progress with my husband and toddler home. Hopefully when they go back to work/daycare and it's just me and the baby I'll be able to focus on it.

@twodoghouse: @erinbaderin: I wonder why the reviews on this are so bad? I've been putting it off because of that...so I should read it?!

@winter_wonder: ok, you and others are convincing me that I should finally read this.
@Bao: wondering the same about this book and the "meh" reviews!
My fave this year was either the Red Rising Trilogy (I'm a dork) or The Martian, such a fun, great read... and I really enjoyed the Outlander books even though they were a little trashy.

@hellobeeboston: read the Nightingale! Best book I've ever read besides Harry Potter.

@Bao: WOW. that is quite a statement... Harry Potter is one of my favorites of all time! OK, I'm in. Reading it next.

@alphagam84: @winter_wonder: I was going to the say the same thing! So good!!

@hellobeeboston: yes, you should! It took me a couple tried to get into it, but then I loved it!

@Bao: @hellobeeboston: Are they really? I don't know, I didn't read any reviews. I read that it was Barack Obama's favourite book of 2015 and added it to my list. I'm only 1/3 through it but I'm enjoying it a lot.

@hellobeeboston: yes it's my all time favorite too, I would say that and HP are tied...HP may be slightly above, but still! Let me know what you think of it.

@Anya: Have you read The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton? I thought it was by far her best book.
I've just realized I read nothing memorable in the last year. I tend to go in phases where I read a lot and can't put books down until they're done. But if I was like that all the time I'd spend a small fortune on books.

I reread the Handmaid's Tale and that was the best that I read in 2016. Not sure if it counts. I didn't read as much regular fiction as I wanted to since I was sick for most of 2016 and when I don't feel well, I go for comfort reading, namely romance or mystery or a combo of the two. The best comfort read was Silent in the Grave by Deanna Raybourn.

@Bao: I didn't know it received bad reviews! I thought it was beautifully written. Most of the characters leave something to be desired - not the writing of them, but just that they are almost all whiny jerks! But that doesn't bother me. I think some of my favorite novels are populated by miserable/self-absorbed human beings. Ha!

@MrsKoala: The Handmaid's Tale is amazing. Margaret Atwood is one of my favorites. I should reread that soon!

@twodoghouse: I didn't really care for it so I probably have no business butting in but you should try The Interestings. I thought it was sort of thought-provoking in a similar way (and with a hearty dose of self-absorbed characters lol!)

@Anya: Oh, thanks for the recc! It was available from my library without a wait list so I'll check it out!
