Do you normally spend a lot of time outdoors? That is what would factor into what I bought.

Last winter was the first time DS spent any amounts of time being outside in the snow and cold and he was 3. Before that he hated it so we didn't force him to he out there.

One piece fleece suits are very good. Of course, we must layer them up but the fleece suits really compensate for any mistakes in clothing. The one piece attricute helps because as children move a lot, their clothes ride up or down, so to take care off that the one-piece really compensates.Fleece hats also tend to sit better and don't itch as much as the woolen ones. Lining the stroller with warm fabrics also helps out. They sleep extremely well in the strollers during winters. I read in one blog that now they have strollers with heaters. It's fancy but I wonder if it's safe. Anyway, so yeah, layers, fleece and warming up the stroller should be fine. Canada's winter are of course very cold, I live in Europe so it doesn't snow just as much here.

I prefer one piece snowsuits right through the toddler years (LL Bean makes great ones that have extendable arm/leg cuffs so while somewhat $$, they are made so well and each suit lasts two winters)

As for boots and mitts at that age, I really like Mimitens. They're a Canadian company and the mitts have long sleeves attached that go under the snowsuit so they can't pull off the mitts. The booties are the same, they were perfect last year when dd2 was 12-15 months and just learning how to walk. Stonz mitts and boots are also awesome !

For my son who turned 1 in January we bought a Columbia fleece one piece snow suit - it had attached boots, foldover hands, and a hood. We got it used because he needed something warm for daycare (they go on walks every day through the winter) but he wasn't going to get that much use out of it.

If you're thinking more along the lines of playing in the snow and going for walks I might go with snow pants that are big enough you can use them again the following winter, and a jacket that would work for stroller walks with blankets tucked over the legs.

We live in Maine and we really like the one piece LL Bean snowsuits with the extend cuffs as we have almost always been able to get 2 winters use out of them, they are easy to put on, very warm and also have decent resale value which helps offset the cost. When LO was around a year even though she wasn’t walking they went outside at daycare almost every day and she would play/sit in the snow. The one-piece suits were definitely easier than trying to wrangle pants, coat, etc. all separately.

The fleece are warm but not as warm as a real snowsuit (same deal as a fleece coat vs. a full-on winter coat), and also not waterproof so not good for real playing in the snow; but fine for being in a stroller, etc. We had a NorthFace fleece bunting that was really nice, but totally different product than a real snowsuit. I loved the fold over hands and feet because it took the stress out of keeping little appendages warm.

LL Bean (and other brands I’m sure) have mittens for toddlers that are really long, so they can be tucked up into a snowsuit/coat sleeve and don’t fall off as easily as regular mittens. Highly recommend finding some long mittens; those were a game-changer for us!

At that age (and almost every other age really!) I keep a nice warm blanket in the car and snuggle that around LO after she’s in her car seat to keep her warm. I mostly would just bundle her up in that to take her into school each morning, rather than trying to get a toddler into a snowsuit inside the car.

My kids have all turned 1 in early winter/late fall. Even if they're walking, they haven't been interested in playing outside in the snow for too long at one time. We have a Columbia one piece suit (I think the bugaboo) that is both a fleece part and a waterproof outer part and it covers the foot although that is kind of a wrap so it isn't ideal if they want to walk around in the snow a long time (water seeps in). Also my toddlers are constantly tearing off their gloves and hats so we don't stay out for long. In the stroller we never had a wrap or bundle thing but we put a lot of blankets around them and that works well.

I have two Dec babie! My first will be 3 this winter and she still hasn't put on a snow suit. She just never played in the snow that much to really need one (nor snow boots). I think this is the first year she'll be needing both. For daycare runs I'd just put her in normal clothes + a warm fleece and throw on jacket getting in/out of the car. We also didn't use a stroller that much so any bunting things weren't really needed. Def lots of hats and long socks!

When my son was that little we never felt motivated to play in the snow. And we never even needed boots because we carried him or he went in the stroller.

@Goldengirl: I would skip the fleece suit. IMO those are only useful if you've got a baby little enough to still be using a stroller bassinet. If you drive then the fleece suits are too warm when you get where you're going and you're inside.

That jacket is warm but car seat safe.

We also have a stroller bunting from JJ Cole and I might get her some fuzzy boots purely for warmth, not snow protection.

I live in Minnesota and have a small collection of winter gear for DD. I also have some fleece snowpants, warm boots, both a warm and a heavyweight jacket, and lots of fleeces/sweatshirts/sweaters + warm hats and mits for the car. DD plays outside at daycare unless its below 10 degrees Fahrenheit, so all this gear may be overkill for some, but we'll use all of it this winter.

@Goldengirl: I used my fleecy one piece suit with a hood and covered feet and hands for the car seat and in the stroller for walks daily. It was invaluable.

My waterproof gap snowsuit with booties and hand covers I paired with stonz and used less only because I stay at home and could choose if my kid went outside...she was 15 months. It was often too cold to sit in the snow and she hated it until she was about 17 months.

@Goldengirl: Sorry, I wrote that early this morning and it didn't make much sense . What I should have said is that if you have a non-walking child and you use a stroller for extended periods, then a fleece bunting can be useful. But personally, I find them hard to use. They can be too warm for the car and too warm once you get inside, and difficult to take off.

For extended periods outside I like to use our stroller muff. We can walk around outside and then once we get inside we don't have to worry about essentially undressing them. I'd use it with a carseat safe coat (like a fleece) and regular winter clothes. But you don't need the fleece suit and the stroller cover.

@Goldengirl: I think it all comes down to preference.

As for the boots, they're all not created equal. If I had to do it all over again, this would have been the one purchase I should have done in person and not on line.

@Goldengirl: yep, I put the stonz over top of the booties and just didn't buy the stonz liner. The stonz went higher up and the attached booties with buttons that came with the snowsuit sucked and let snow in around the ankle.

I feel like the flexible stonz are the best option for a new walker because they cinch above the ankle and you don't have to worry about trying to jam their foot in and having them fall off while they sit, crawl, and fall over in the snow

@Goldengirl: sadly yes! I just didn't buy the liners at all last year and got the stonz on a buy and sell for $5! Haha. But I know I won't always be so lucky.
