Is this normal? He's 5.5 months old. I get a few babbles out of him here and there when I'm trying to "talk" to him, but when I leave him alone either in his play area or in his crib for naps, he babbles a lot more! >_< Does he have trust issues or something?

I think all babies do this to some extent, they smile to themselves and babble to themselves more in the beginning than to anyone else.

LO did this too. She started really "talking" to us around 6.5-7 months. I don't think they can make the connection between the sounds they are making and communicating before then.

C did this too. She always babbled the most when she thought no one was listening.

M also did this. Whenever I was with her and would talk to her, she was more of a listener than a talker. Like she was concentrating really hard on what I had to say. Now at 9 months, she's found her voice and babbles on and on if she's in a talkative mood. I love it!

I'm pretty sure this has to do with the biology of the brain; babies watch/absorb when they are with us, and then spend time alone "practicing." http://www.sharp.com/pediatrics/ask-expert-babbling.cfm , http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/12/health/12klass.html?_r=0 . I wouldn't take it as something to worry about; just continue to be responsive and model conversational turn-taking.

i think this is normal! when LO was that age i loved listening to him 'talk' to himself in his crib when he woke up! i always tried to record it b/c it would happen way way less when he knew we were around
