@Purpledaisy: Is her husband a big guy? My husband is a giant man and so everyone expected our kids to be big and they were both really small. My son was in the 3rd% for height and weight for a while. I was really stressed that he would always be small and get lots of comments about "why are you so small and your dad is so big"? Well those worries were unfounded since my son is now 18 months and a big boy, but it was something that stressed me out. So I wonder if your friend has something like that in the back of her mind. I mean, she can't not know right? The doctor gives you percentages!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: there is a pseudo celebrity that I follow on Instagram and her kid anyways looks like she's bursting out of her clothes! It's so uncomfortable looking!

I do know a couple who is pretty consistent in saying how big their son is for his age. He seems pretty average/skinny to me. Maybe they are worried about it and that's why they comment on it a lot? I used to care about my older son's weight gain because he was a preemie but I don't pay attention now - of course he's in the 80% so the worry is gone.

I have the opposite situation. My little guy is on the small side (10% height, 25% weight) and everyone is always telling me how big he is. Literally every day, someone new will comment on it. I find it very odd.

@Purpledaisy: does your friend have an older child who was really small? My first daughter was tiny so now I constantly comment on how chubby my second daughter is. In reality she's 40th percentile so not huge by any means. But for me, compared to my first, she's adorably chubby!

I actually have the opposite "issue". Everyone says my son is huge but he's really not! He's like 55th for weight and I guess he's a little tall in the 76th but it's not usually height that people comment on. They say he's big and burly, but I don't get it.

@Peasinapod: same here!! Lo2 looks huge to me even though she's totally average size because lo1 was so small.

I also wonder if she maybe has insecurities about her los siz? I had major supply issues with lo1 and had so much guilt and insecurity about her growth for so long (tbh I still worry and she's 3 and long past bfing!). I know I definitely talk about lo2 being chubby because I still worry about my supply even though so far it hasn't been a problem and her growth has been great

@wrkbrk: I have this issue. My daughter is also in the 95% for height and 90% for weight.It really is so annoying. People will ask her a question, and she's just starting to find words now (almost 2) and they are shocked when she doesn't respond with like a full sentence.....I then remind them that she's not even 2 yet!

@LuLu Mom: I feel like I'm going to be dealing with this a lot! DD is nearly 4 months and just really tiny. We haven't had her percentiles calculated since 2 months but I want to say she's probably below 5% in both height and weight. Everyone makes comments like, "Oh, she's brand new!" and the other day someone said "She must be a few weeks, right?" Nope, 16 weeks, but thanks. I am self conscious about it and stress about her weight gain though, so that colors things.

Not me, but a lot of people say *to* me that my son is big, yet his percentiles always seem pretty average, between 50th and 75th% for weight and height. I will agree with them that he is pretty strong though, so maybe that's what gives the impression that he is big.

@wrkbrk: it doesn't annoy me now, however when she catches on and if it starts being a problem then i will get annoyed. I was small and so was my husband and I used to get so mad about people making comments when i was in elementary school (I was a late bloomer and am now tall but my husband has had these comments his whole life.)

@IRunForFun: Don't let the comments bother you (easy to say I know) but I used to respond back "doctors say she's healthy as can be, she's just small but growing well!" And that usually shut them up.

YES! DD1's BFF's Mom is convinced our kids are the same size. And they're within a 2-3 inch height wise.. But my kid is a solid 5-10lbs heavier and always has been (which is a lot when they're 3)
I get it's because her kid had failure to thrive for the first six months, but it's bizarre when she's like "J wears a 4T now! Is A still in 3T?"
Aaaaaaaand I'm like "Err... A grew out of 3T like six months ago. She's wearing a 5 right now."

I have a friend that does that with milestones. Makes a big deal over her baby doing things super early but the baby can't actually do the things she says.

@LuLu Mom: Yikes, I didnt even think about him hearing this and understanding it down the line ... sigh.

People would always comment how big my kid was from birth. Even though she was comparatively small. And yet she had a 99th percentile head (yeah, ouch). It was really bewildering to get all of those comments. She also has a ton of hair. I think people in general are really bad at judging age vs size (and also milestones). Both parents and non-parents. For parents their sample size includes their number of kids. For non-parents it includes kids you don't see everyday (like relatives) and in both groups your basis of comparison can be so skewed. And also I'd say as a society it's a general first reaction to comment on a kids looks before anything else.

@oliviaoblivia: omg THIS TOO. Some
of friends from mommy & me have been posting that their LOs are "crawling" and "on the move" and "cruising on furniture" and "can't leave them alone for a nanosecond" since they were 5.5 months old. No way. I'm seeing them tomorrow and can't wait to judge how much actual cruising and crawling is happening... my prediction is none.

I have a friend who's daughter is about a week older then my son. They're about the same size, the girl is maybe slightly heavier then my son. (They're both tall height and average to above average weight) Ever since they were born she's constantly saying how her girl is in bigger clothing sizes. But all her pants are like 2-3 inches too long. It's hilarious!!!
