I am 33 and don't have a history of genetic issues butttttttt I want to get the Natera fetal DNA testing. It's the one my practice offers. I'm scared of false positives with my upcoming NT scan (measuring a part of the neck of a wriggling baby? Really?)
Did anyone get Natera who technically didn't qualify for it (over 35, etc)? How did it work with approval/ insurance? I don't mind paying a little out of pocket for sure but not the apparent $8000 it costs!

This is the Panorama test, right? I had it done in February and my insurance didn't cover it. I eventually got a bill for $400 and I called to see if they could lower it. They couldn't do it over the phone but said sometimes there were offers online, so I went online and there was an option that said something like "I'm interested in a discount" which lowered the price to $200, without me really having to do anything. Frankly the lack of transparency on the cost annoyed me, but in any case I'd expect you'd end up paying a few hundred, not $8,000.

@RacheBon: yes, the Panorama. It is a very nebulous price that's for sure! Thanks for the info! My 2 friends both said they charge insurance $8,000 (!!!) then you call and get it reduced. Gotta love our health care system.

I've had it done with both pregnancies. Initial bill is over $2K. They bill it to insurance. Insurance denies it and then they send me a bill for $200. It was fairly hassle free. So happy I got it done for peace of mind.

I had the same experience, I got a bill for like a grand and haggled it down to $150 or so. Worth it for peace of mind (And I didn't even find out gender!)

@pachamama: My doctor recommended I have panorama done even though I'm < 35. She explained they'd bill to insurance, and if insurance denied it, the cost to me would only be $100. Surprisingly, my insurance covered it, and I never received a bill.

Hi, I had the panorama test done with my son. I was 30 years old at the time. My insurance covered it... I don't know why, I was fully expecting a bill.

@JLC53: @sillymilly: That's so interesting and awesome that insurance unexpectedly covered it! I talked to the Natera rep just now and he said Empire (my insurance) won't cover it but he told me to call Natera with "the code" and they reduce it to a "cap of $200". I can handle that I think!

I'm over 35 and have a history of trisomy, but just got a letter from my insurance saying testing wasn't covered.
I'm not sure if they did something in addition to the simple trisomy test or what (I haven't gotten an actual bill yet). But my EOB currently says I owe like $700.
When I took it last year, my EOB was in the thousands, but I only ever got a bill that said "compassionate coverage" (the test was positive) and the charge was $25.

@MaryM: try fighting it. My insurance company refused to cover the testing at first and After speaking with the doctor's office, they resubmitted the paperwork using different codes. Insurance ended up covering it and it only cost like $25.

@MaryM: that definitely sounds like an error to me. I'm also over 35 and have a history/high likelihood of trisomy, that's why we had to do IVF with PGD. It's covered and if it wasn't I would be raising hell. This test is most beneficial for people like us. If it's not covered for us then who the heck is it covered for?!

@SweetiePie: I have a feeling the nurse might have written the order for additional testing that might not have been covered. Because of my history of loss, last pregnancy they ran a full panel that assessed if I carried any recessive genes for a number of different diagnoses. My doctor clearly said I didn't need that this time. But he was gone by the time the nurse finished drawing my blood and wrote the order for me.
If it's not being covered because of those tests, I plan to remind the doctor of that and try to get them to somehow get the charges removed since I was not aware they were testing for anything beyond the trisomies.

I won't be needing it. Went in for my NT scan and found out the baby died at 8w6d. Had a d&c yesterday.
