The new law bans abortions as once a heartbeat is detected.
I get genuinely confused by how SOME people (specifically law makers) seem to care so much about the life of someone elses unborn fetus but simultaneously care so little about the life of actual living children who are in need of assistance either due to being low income, or different in some way, such as refugee children.

I am pro-life. I am also a foster/adopt mom. Do not assume that all pro-lifers "care nothing" about actual children...that is absurd and extremely offensive to those of us who work really hard to improve the lives of children.

Seems like a way to get brain drain. I think it would encourage young people who are fortunate to move, to move out of Ohio.

@tlynne: I think she was referring to those people who are pro-life but also want to slash funding for government programs to support low income parents. Not all pro-lifers are the same of course but I don't think that is what she was saying...?

I think this is insane; and we (those opposed) better get on it quickly, which we will. We'll be saying that a lot over the next 4 years, while pro-actual-child programs are slashed right and left. Ah, "family values" politicians.

Because it's easier to be the judgemental and moralistic ambulance at the bottom of the cliff than to provide the education and support to men and women to make educated choices when it comes to sex and reproduction.

This and the Texas law have me fuming. And I'm afraid it's only going to get worse. Abortion has been decided. Roe v. Wade took care of that. Can we PLEASE focus on other issues? If you want fewer abortions to happen, laws like this will absolutely not accomplish that. Instead women will (once again) go to back-alley butchers claiming to be doctors in order to obtain abortions. All this does is put women's health at risk. But hey, if you want people to give birth so bad, how about subsidized daycare? Expanding medicaid? Universal health care? Increased funding of SNAP benefits? Improved parental leave? Things that actually support families and children, rather than just control female bodies.

I don't even live in Ohio but I called Kasich's office and asked him to please veto this law.
These arcane regulations over womens' bodies are infuriating.

This is infuriating. These laws are proposed by men who I'm 100% certain will never be pregnant.
Don't forget about women who are faced with ending WANTED pregnancies due to poor fetal diagnosis or their own health. These decisions are literally never ones that are needed to be made in the first 6 weeks - and the circumstances surrounding these abortions often don't even present until the second trimester.

I think this is insane. I didn't even find out I was pregnant until about 6 weeks with my first. That baby was very much wanted, but what if that hadn't been the case? Under this law, I wouldn't have had a legal option to terminate.

This is so upsetting. Have any of these lawmakers sat across from an OB to be told that their baby is incompatible with life? And will die upon delivery, if they make it that far? Like @winniebee said, these decisions are pretty much always made well after 6 weeks. This is so, so upsetting.

An update: Kasich did not sign this and vetoed it. He did however sign a bill stating after 20weeks abortion is a felony in the state UNLESS the health of the mother is in danger.
(Not great on that part for pro choice but I know Nationally it's less than 1% of abortions are after 20weeks anyway. )

His veto and signing of the 20 week ban are nothing but political games. So now, we can all say, "yay, he didn't sign the 6 week ban, so the 20 week ban isn't as bad." HELLS NO. This law doesn't take into account the life of the mother or a poor fetal diagnosis which can't always be confirmed until after 20 weeks...and which are mostly wanted pregnancies. I'm refusing to see this has a win or a nice "moderate" move from Mr. Kasich.
One more rant: Aren't Republicans for SMALL government? Trump may pick a guy to head the FDA that wants people to determine whether drugs are safe, not the FDA. You want to give power back to the people?? Then get the F out of people's bedrooms.
