I don't think you're crazy either! Our basement room was supposed to be the guest room but we need it as an office. I figure we can just reorganize it into a guest room for those rare visits from family.

I think it's crazier to have a space that only gets used twice a year when there is another way to use the space that's more valuable to you!

That said we don't have a guest room and I do wish we did, but I'd be fine with a decent pullout couch or futon in a room we use as something else the rest of the time.

We have a futon in our office. I think it is pretty common.

We are losing ours when LO2 arrives in the spring. We will have a daybed in one kiddos room that can turn into a double so we can sleep guests when needed, but we will continue to use our 4th BR as DHs office.

We do this. I would say that I am glad we spent the extra money to get a really high quality pullout. It is a tempurepedic mattress, and our guests love it. It's also nice when one of us is sick and wants to sleep in the other room.

Seems like a no brainer to me to use the room as needed. We don't even have a guest room and we've had 6 or 7 overnight/longish stay guests since January. You just make it work.

For us, having a guest room is an absolute must. Family lives far away and it's not like they visit super often but when they do we absolutely want to have a comfortable space for them to stay in. Could you just add a desk to the room but keep the full size bed? I wouldn't ever want to ask my parents to sleep on a futon or air mattress when they come to stay with us. When we were in a 3BR we kept a guest room and had a desk set up in our kitchen. Our new house is a 4BR + office so we had two designated guest rooms for a bit but now that we have LO2 on the way we are back to one guest room (LO1 is in a queen so if we have extra company she can always sleep in our room and we can put guests in her room).

I see no reason to have a designated guest room for 2x a year. We have an office and pull out couch for guests that gets used about 1 a month for guests, but we just don't have space to accommodate a full guest room.

We did the exact same thing when LO arrived. Having a guest room is nice, but it seems so silly when it only gets used a few times a year and we really do need a home office. We have since hosted a friend who just slept on an air mattress in the office and it worked out fine.

You should totally do it. You should do what is best for your family. If you dont have guest often, then its wasted space.

Having a guest room is really important to us. We have family visit almost every month it seems like but even if they didn't visit often, we would want them to be able to stay with us and be comfortable. (Well, the mattress and box springs are pretty old, haha, but it is more comfortable than a futon!)

We have a mini office set up in our loft / playroom area and it works well. When we have another baby I don't know what we'll do if we are still in a 3 bedroom. Hopefully we can get into a 4 bedroom at some point! The master is downstairs at our current house so I imagine we won't do a nursery right away, anyway.

We have a 3 bedroom apartment. The third bedroom has a desk and a sleeper sofa. 80% of the time it's an office and when we have a guest or a rare night our nanny stays over the bed is used. It works really well so I think your plan is a good one.

It's great if you have a space, but I don't think it needs to be a dedicated guest space if not used frequently. Our spare room is a movie room/home theatre and the couch makes up into a bed (comfy couch bed; no springs). But our families live close so it will be only very rarely used.

Just throwing this out there, but we had a designated guest room and it just turned in to the husband's room after our son was born because I took on co-sleeping, the baby is a super light sleeper, my husband has insomnia and gets up before 5 AM for work, sooo... it worked out for us to turn it in to daddy's room. You can always change your mind in the future as your family needs!
