My son (3.5) has been invited to two 4th birthday parties on the same day, both for fairly good friends (from daycare). Both are two hours long and they overlap for an hour. Would it be rude to ask the hosts if it would be a problem to leave early/arrive late so that he can go to both? (Would be via text message, as that's how both asked for rsvps).

I voted that yes, it’s ok.
But personally I’d never want to do that. I’d pick the one I got invited to first and say sorry to the other one. But that’s just because it’s a huge hassle and I don’t particularly like going to these parties. -
I think it would be fine to go to part of both but if it were me I'd pick one to attend.

I think it doesn't hurt to ask either. But I would def ask for all the details of what's going on at the parties so he's not missing the "crucial" parts. Also I would take into consideration how far the events are from each other. AND also he might be having so much fun at the first one that he really doesn't want to leave...

I would probably decline both as I wouldn’t want to choose between and my kid would not leave one easily.

Does your son have a preference? I'd ask him to choose one ahead of time.
I'd hate to plan on both, and then end up with him having so much fun at the first one that he doesn't want to leave. So if HE says the second one is the one he wants to go to most, make sure you talk that through with him and get him on board with leaving the other one early. Or maybe consider skipping it all together.
If he chooses the first one, maybe RSVP to the second one that you hope to make it, but you have earlier plans so you might not be able to.

I say yes. Attend an an hour and 15 minutes of the first, and then the back half of the second. You don't even need to ask the hosts. Just do what you have to do. Or, make it easier on yourself and just pick one!

@Nonimouse: I would just pick one - I imagine like another poster said your DS will end up having lots of fun and not want to leave the 1st one

Thanks for all the input! I decided to ask DS and he says he wants to go to kid 2s party. I'll touch base with kid 1s mom and we may try to go to the first hour of that one--we'll see.
It just sucks that out of the whole weekend, these two parties pick part of the same 3 hour time period! Oh well.

I did this in the past with my son. We went to one party and got there right as it started but left a little over an hour into it and then went to the next party where we were 45 minutes late. I probably wouldn't want to do that again, because I felt a little rude both times for leaving early/being late, but I know when I host parties, people are often early or late for all sorts of reasons.

@aprild: I think much of my concern is that Ill feel rude leaving early/arriving late, but I also feel rude missing kid1s party. I really like her and we're friendly with her parents (though not outside kid related events). I can't decide which seems worse!

@Nonimouse: If these are both day care friends I'm sure there are a lot of people in your same position who were invited to both parties. I would try to attend both with an early leave/late arrival. If you son's preference was for the second party I would tell the first party's host "we've already committed to a party immediately following yours but we would love to come celebrate for the first half of your LO's part if that's ok?"
